High oil pressure

Today i noticed something i have never before

 

My oil pressure was well over 60.  It was getting close to 80.  Only when accelerating then when i would let up off the gas it would drop down.

 

Anyone elses truck doing this?

Sounds perfectly normal to me.  Its a combination of the very cold weather that has finally arrived and you accelerating while the motor was still fairly cold.  (making an assumption)  Just for example, by TBI 350 which runs much less oil pressure then the Vortec motors pegs the oil pressure gauge at over 60psi when I first drive away in the morning.  Keeps doing this until the oil starts getting warm and then it drops back down to the normal range.

I talked to my dad when he got home from work today (mechanic) and he said its normal.  

 

I just have never seen it get so close to 80.  Kinda worried me

Well you can be sure of one thing..........your oil pressure gauge is working.  Mine does the same thing, perfectly normal.

my oil pressure tops out at around 70 something per the dash gauge

 

it will hold this pressure at cruise speeds  through just above idle at hot idle it is arround 30psi

 

it will hold 70 something when cold regaurdless of rpm (thick oil)

 

this would be the presssure that the relif valve opens and ports oil back to the pan

 

it would be odd for it to suddenly go up ??? that does not seam excessive but the relief valve should always open at the same pressure

Ryan - I'm with everyone else, mines always around 70 or so...shocked me the first time I noticed too (coming from small cars).  I would assume that whats more important is not exactly where its at to begin with but if it ever varies greatly from where it normally is....
