Clunk!!

Less than a year nafter acquiring the tahoe new, we started feeling and hearing a clunk when we pulled up to a traffic light. sometimes it occurred when the truck was settling, and sometimes when we took our foot off of the brake, and still again, sometimes, when we would hit the gas.

 

chevy kept greasing where the driveshaft connects to the tranny.... all was smooth for 2-3K miles after that. then it would come back....

 

they called it a 'maintenance' item. could not continue to warranty.

 

i threatened to lemon law the thing and they let me go back to the shop and see what the tech was doing.

 

he dropped the driveshaft and lubed that yolk? and was done....

 

i have been doing this every oil change, and it is getting old.

i even had a mechanic i know do the lube thing with me and he was perplexed that it actually fixed the problem

 

 

THEN, i was talking to an old chevrolet service manager who told me that i was treating the symptoms.... not the problem.

 

he said that what i was feeling and hearing was actually the rear springs getting bunched up when the rear axle twisted at stop/go.

"you see", he goes on, "those things get all rusty and dont slide like they are supposed to..." and chevy never fixed it.

 

so, for the last 4 years, i have been masking the problem with the grease and chevy lied to me.

 

can i get any relief from chevy for lieing to me?

can i force them to pay to have it fixed?

am i screwed for waiting so long?

That wasn't necessarily a lie you were told. There's much debate regarding driveline clunk. I've had some tell me it was the slip yoke, others discuss axle wrap as you mentioned. On my truck, they greased the yoke several times with elimination of the clunk for a time. Eventually they replaced the yoke with the nickel plated version. Finally, I was doing fluid changes and changed the t-case fluid to the newer blue fluid for the Autotrac. These services are what was recommended for treating the clunk caused by the yoke. My truck has been quiet on decel/accel since.
