Alternator Question

Is it possible for an alternator to have the proper operating voltage, but to also have a low amperage output? A check of my '96 one ton the other day revealed only 38 amps, measured at the battery. I know that the alternator is supposed to be at least 105 amps. The operating voltage was 14.3v.

A properly operating alt will produce the current needed to reach the proper charge voltage. 14.3v is a good charge voltage. 105amp rating is the max the alt can produce for a short period of time. It will burn up if it produces that much current for more than a couple of seconds.

So in short, your alt is fine.
