Help with Electronics

Hey all,

 

Gotta 94' 4.3L. Runs fantastic at 176k miles BUT I noticed today that when you put the left blinker (left only) and then turn the wheel does not shut it off for you. I'm having to shut the turn signal off manually. Anyone have any expirence or ideas?

Not sure about what would cause it...The last steering column I had apart was on a 75 Cutlass (horn would honk everytime you turned the wheel). I do know that you can pick a (used) stalk up for about $15 (or less) down the road from my house. If that's the problem, let me know, I'll swing by and pick one up for you.

There is a little cog inside that trips it back off when you wheel returns to center. On older trucks they sometimes wear out and then the signal doesn't cancel itself. You can take the column aprat and fix it, but it may be cheaper to just get a new column. Is yours tilt? If not it would be a great time to upgrade. Make sure your new column comes with a key or you will be out more money to get one made.

How difficult would it be do swap the steering column? Mine is tilt. What is involved in doing this. I'd like to give a shot, but I definatly have a few concerns about screwing something up.

You should'nt need to replace the column OR the switch...If I remember correctly you should have the old style tilt column (it should be round instead of the larger rectangular plastic covered one in my '95 or newer trucks) there are 2 CANCEL SPRINGS on the switch that can be replaced w/o changing the whole switch, last time I bought them at a dealer they were about $.32 each. I think you can also get them in the HELP section of your local parts store ( PEP Boys has them in my area)...It just takes awhile to pull the steering wheel and column lock plate to get to them....Chapter 12 in my Haynes manual explains the procedure pretty well w/pictures too

napa carries them springs also if that tells you how common it is. if the spring broke that is all you need sometimes the plastic that hold it in place breaks and then you need a turn signal switch to replace that cut the wire on the old one at the switch tape the new connector to it and pull from the bottom of course that is after the steering wheel and lock plate is off.

Ummm...I was just talking about the signal stalk.

 

 

Although, I'm sure that they have the entire column as well.

 

But from the other posts, it doesn't look like you are going to have to replace the whole thing.

Ohh just the signal stalk. I'm an idiot. I'll have to swallow the pill and get a Haynes manual.

 

Thanks everyone. I'm gonna try the cancel springs first. Then maybe replace the whole stalk. My decals are coming off of mine anyhow...
