New Toy

Nice choice! :fume: Do yourself a favor and crank the oiler adjustment on the bottom of the saw as far open as it'll go if it's not already. I have an MS310 of my own and have run bars of 16", 18" & 20" on it. 310s are skimpy on the amount of bar oil they put out. A guy at the shop where I deal recommends opening the oilers all the way up all the MS290s, 310s and 390s if you buy any of them with bars 18" or over. No big deal right now but over time it will save wear on the chain, bar and sprocket and bar oil is cheaper than a new bar and chains.

Here's a shot of my Stihl MS440 I bought last winter:

Have fun sawing. I'll bet Stihl and the other saw companies are loving this year's hurricane season! :D

Thanks for the tip. :fume: This one has a 25" bar. Had to get this one because the Stihl 011 avt wasnt big enough for some of the stuff Frances brought down. :D

Edit:

Everything I have seen about this saw says 16-20" bar. But....

this is what it came with.

Oh yeah, it's got more than enough power to run a 25" bar a even a little longer if you wanted-just make sure you're getting enough oil to the tip of the bar so the sprocket won't wear out too fast. My 310 came with a 20" bar and it was great-it's the easiest-starting saw I've ever owned. Got a 16" on it now and it really screams! That's also an upscale bar you got there. The "ES" bars are stiffer than the regular Rollomatics and the sprocket/tip is replaceable if you wear it out.

But I made the mistake of cutting up a good sized poplar tree with my bro-in-law's 440 Magnum and I was hooked-the 310 is strong but the 440 is scary. Went and bought one a few weeks later and put the 20" bar on it. I use them both depending on the size of the wood. Also have a few older smaller saws for trimming etc.

I'm a power-equipment nut and I've never owned a Stihl product I wasn't happy with!

You cutting up any Palm trees? I've heard they're really hard on chains due to they pick up a little bit of sand as they grow and hold it in the bark which in turn dulls a chain quick. Don't know if it's true but it sounded believable.

That is how it has been with my family ever since my grandpa bought his Stihl (011 avt I believe or something of that size) around the time that I was born. That thing runs like new coming up on its 20th b-day. After seeing what Frances knocked down we had a choice, a couple hundred for a new saw, or a couple hundred for a tree service. The choice was obvious. :fume:

I bought a craftsman 18" 42cc (dont laugh lol) for $35 @ the repair center. Bought a 5 year warranty for another $10. Cant beat it.

Also got a blower, misc power tools (had to have it---haha) new ladder, new mower, and a weedeater.
