Here is an easy one for ya...

Hello All!

I just bought this 86 Vandura that needs a new transmission. The stock tranny is the 700-R4. The seller was going to put in a TH400 (which is now in my possession) but "never got around to it", hence a better deal on the purchase price for me.

Here is my first question... why do they make trannys with the same model number yet come in different sizes? Seems this 400 is "short" in length. I guess it makes a difference whether it came out of a car or truck eh? Can it still work or would I (well... not me personally) have to put in a different drive line and cross member? I understand already that I would be giving up overdrive by going with this or another turbo 400.

Okay, assuming it won't work, or requires extra work or I just decide to hunt down a tranny myself... guess I need to make sure (whether a 400 or 700) that it come out of a full size truck, van or suburban?

I'm leaning to stay with the 4 speed. Even though I've heard stories... I think I may be safe with the 700 as I will not be pulling or hauling.

Please help me understand the basics because I'm...

You can relocate the cross member by redrilling the fram rails then sliding it forward as for the drive shaft if you lucky you can get one from a bone yard for a longer wheel base veh. most likely you will have to have one made. just my .02
