Grinding noise from front end when backing up

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone;

My truck is intermittently making a grinding noise from the front end when backing up.  Sounds like it's coming from the passenger side front tire area.  Sometimes it's quite loud, other times it doesn't do it at all.  Any ideas as to what to look for?  I'm taking it in to the dealer on Thursday, but I'll bet I hear the dreaded "could not duplicate".

Thanks!

If it's something that you know how to duplicate the noise, like a certain locating that it always does it, or something like that, then request that the tech rides with you and let him hear the noise with you driving it.  I've done that a couple times and it seems to help.  At least you will know that someone actually heard it, if you can duplicate it with them in the truck.

Good luck.

You probably have already considered this, but can the noise be reproduced only with certain steering and or throttle inputs.  If you only hear it at full lock, for example, it might suggest something to the GM tech. that a noise at most any steering input might not.  Good luck...

If you've never had a GM truck before, as you back up after starting the ABS system powers up and makes a rather unique, grinding-like noise.

Sure enough, the service techs could not duplicate.  However, my service advisor thought it might be the ABS cycling though it's self-test.  Maybe.  A couple days later my wife pulled a stick out of the front passenger side wheel well.  Maybe that was rubbing on something?  Anyway, haven't heard any weird noises since.

My '93 S-10 Blazer sounded like a cow when the ABS would self-test.  The new system defintely sounds different.
