muddog Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Ok, here is what I want to do: I currently use my truck to listen to music when we are camping and just sitting outside....I will be putting in a 4 channel amp to run 1 10" sub and the front speakers (components). So if I have my truck turned off, and listen to music with the amp, it kills the battery real quick(an hour or so). So is there a way to turn off the amp, and then switch the front speakers to be wire stock? what I was thinking was, have one switch to turn the power of the amp off, then one or two switches to switch the fronts from running through the amp to stock wiring.... we have tried using 2 relays and 1 switch, but that didnt work, well it did for like a couple minutes, then the amp fried. anyone have any ideas? hope I got my idea across....thanks for the help I have a 96 chevy 1500 regular cab. Kenwood HU componet infinity fronts stock rears 10" mtx sub 7540A Infinity amp
Wingnut Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 I don't see why it couldn't be done. Another idea would be to buy a 3 channel amp, and only amp the front speakers, and the sub...Leaving the head unit to drive the rears. Then just use the fader to move all the head units output to the rear speakers. Or something along those lines.
muddog Posted October 13, 2004 Author Posted October 13, 2004 well that is what I am doing with the 4 channel, amping the fronts, and bridging 2 channels for the sub. I thought about just using the rears, but they suck, especially since they are still stock...and sometime we like our music loud I figured it should be possible, I just didnt know if there were any special switches for such a application....because if not I would basicly need 4 switches, one for each +/- wire for each speaker....I guess what I am trying to get at, it there any switches were I would only need 1 or 2 switches for the speakers?? hope I havent confused ya thanks for the reply
SlamminL5s Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Hmm.. That souds kinda weird... but why dont you just upgrade to a optima battery.... i can run my system for at least 2 and a half hours and im pushing 2,000 watts of rockford power to 4 stage 1's components are running stock right now because im to lazy to wire them in for an amp but i have a 500/4 rockford amp for that... my 2 cents.... just upgrade battery!
muddog Posted October 14, 2004 Author Posted October 14, 2004 hayward, I have thought about that...I guess I will look into it more....are there any places to get a good deal on a optima? and waht color are you running red or yellow? thanks
Halen5150 Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Or, here's another option if you have the cash. You could amp the sub and components with separate amps. You'll need a head unit with sub control and multiple sets of preamp outputs. Connect the sub amp rca cables to the sub preamp output on the head unit, and the other amp's rca cables to the front preamp outputs on the head unit. Then, when you want to kill the sub to save battery life, just use the sub control on the head unit to turn the sub output off. Although your components will still be running from the other amp, I don't think the current draw from them will be that much.
