How many miles on your truck when

Recommended Posts

I have 2352 miles and don't think it is "broken in" yet.

Also, I have had 4 brand new trucks since 1996. One was a nissan, two were fords and now this GMC. None of the other trucks seemed to use any oil at all from the get go. In the 2352 miles I have put on the GMC, the oil level has dropped from the full mark to the first hole in the dipstick right below the full mark. This may not be much, but based on the previous 3 trucks, this is a change. I was wondering if this is normal for a GM engine these days? If you have experienced this oil usage in your GM truck, did it stop after it was "broken in"?

I put a new 5.7 TBI in my '95 about 20,000 miles ago. It didn't use a drop of oil, but my gas mileage didn't come back to normal for almost 10,000 miles.

I have 6K on mine now and to date I don't think I have used any oil. My 99 Serria never used any oil in 27K miles. Both trucks had 4.8s. I think the break-in period ends around 10K. My 99 Serria seemed to continue to improve in performane up to that point then leveled off. My 01 Silverado continues to improve as the miles rack up.

there is a TSB out about this:

Higher than Expected Engine Oil Consumption (Replace PCV Valve)

1999-2002 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Models

2002 Cadillac Escalade

with 5.3L or 6.0L Engine (VINs T, N, U - RPOs LM7, LQ9, LQ4)

Condition

Some customers may comment on higher than expected engine oil consumption. They may further comment on consumption in the range of 2,000 miles (3,200 km) or less per quart (0.946 liter) of oil under normal driving conditions.

Cause

The condition may be due to the PCV Valve flow rate under certain engine operating conditions.

Correction

Verify that the oil consumption is not the result of an oil leak or other engine concern.

Dealer should perform an oil consumption test. The vehicle should have accumulated over 4,000 miles (6,450 km) before establishing the oil consumption rate. Reference Service Bulletin #01-06-01-011, Information on Engine Oil Consumption Guideline, for details.

Remove the PCV Valve and inspect the hose going to the intake manifold for signs of excessive oil being present.

If excessive oil is present in the PCV hose, replace the PCV Valve Type 948C (2) with a new-style fixed orifice PCV Valve Type CV2001-C (1). See Fig. 1 - PCV Valve Identification.

FIGURE Figure 1 -- PCV Valve Identification©

(1) New style fixed orifice PCV Valve Type CV2001-C

(2) Spring and plunger style PCV Valve Type 948-C

Important

Do not install the new style fixed orifice PCV Valve on vehicles equipped with the 4.8L V8 Engine (RPO LR4). Use of this orifice on the 4.8L V8 engine may affect engine idle quality and engine RPM control.

Important

The new style fixed orifice PCV Valve contains no moving parts, and does not rattle when shaken.

If the vehicle has an orifice style PCV Valve, investigate other causes for high oil consumption.

I have almost 2500 miles on my 6.0L and it keeps feeling better everyday so I don't think it's broken in yet.  The last time I checked my oil it was at the first hole too...  That didn't concern me at all.  I don't know where it was at when it was new (stupid me never checked), but it can't take much oil to raise or lower it one hole on the dipstick (I wouldn't think).

My '99 5.3 seems to be about where most of them are - break-in around 10K miles.  It definitely felt looser after 10K miles, but has not lost any of that since (now ~ 40K happy miles)  :D

Little or no oil use over ~ 3K oil change intervals - and this has never changed.

Doesn't sound like your usage is that bad, especially being new, but prob. wouldn't hurt to monitor and if it doesn't improve, and contact the dealer about that TSB.

I'm not convinced that the "normal" usage they indicate in the TSB is really acceptable.  But the real question is - can anyone really get GM to do anything about it if your usage is not worse than their "guidelines"!!

Good luck!
