98 Burban problems

New to forum. Have some questions regaurding my recent purchase of a 98 K2500 (454) Suburban. I bought it with 100K and got what I thought was a great deal. After I bought it I found out why I got such a good deal :nono: . I have Autotrack (NP246) and the transfer case was bad. You wouldn't have known it was bad unless you go down a very steep hill. It would go into nuetral and make a horable grinding noise. I just replaced it with a new one. My question is, is it normal to hear a slight whining noise in the drive train? I can only hear it above 50 MPH and only when under load (not real load). Also I noticed that I can spin my front drive shaft easily on my old one and the new one does not turn when sitting in park.

 

Do you guys that tow use OD? My toy hauler weighs about 6500 lbs loaded and the rig seems to pull it pretty easily in OD.

 

I have slight miss at idle and was told that it is normal for my vehicle because GM has them idle pretty lean.

 

When I drove it in the rain my passenger floor got wet. Seems to only be water (not antifreeze). I can't seem to find where it is comming in from. Is this a common problem?

 

Horn doesn't work (fuse and relay is ok) again, is this common?

 

Thinking about a K&N and 3.5" Flowmaster cat back. Anybody done this with good results? Looking for improvement in performance and milage when towing.

 

Anybody with some insight would be greatly apreciated!!!

I have a 99 Suburban K1500 with the autotrac. It has 135,000 miles on it now. I pull a steel 2 horse trailer that weighs about 5000 with two horses on. I can pull that without any complaints. The engine temp will rise a little but never dangerously. It has the 5.7l Vortec with 3.42 gears. I have a Wester's program in the PCM. It is tailored for mild performance and towing. Mileage is 17 empty and 10-11 towing, with the AC on. I keep the trans in OD and let the PCM do the shifting. Works real well.

No miss at idle.

I hear tire whine at highway speeds.

My auto trac case went out right after i bought mine. it had 58,000 miles on it. after a few trips to the dealer and a letter to the BBB and the state attorney (sp)general the dealer replaced it. Over the two month ordeal i became friends with the tech that was working on it. Saw him at a bar bought him a beer and he spilled his guts. He stated that they are a weak link if they are used in the auto trac mode often . The computer is so sensitive that if there is as much as two PSI difference in tire pressure between the front and rear it will pop it in and out. This will then strech the heck out of the chain. He suggested using only the auto trac if on ice or heavy snow but for the most part stay away from it. Like he said if in dought put it in four high. As for the flomaster and KNN i noticed a few MPG increase when i add mine. the big thing was the increase in low end torque. I notice no whine in mine, but have heard that the front hub will make a slight whine when going bad. Hope it helps.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
