Is there any way to tell origional factory upgrades (rear end gearing, motor specs, towing package etc..) from just the vin number

No, but there is if you look up the RPO codes on the sticker in the glove box and compare it to the RPO list link on the left side of this site.

If you have a friendly contact at the dealership, they can print a LOT of information about your vehicle from the VIN. The RPO codes also provide a sure-fire method, as was suggested.

 

When I was considering the purchase of my truck (I live in NC, truck was in Omaha, NV), a service manager at the local dealership input the VIN and printed out all the RPOs/features, the build facilities, recalls performed/needed and maybe some other stuff.

 

As hard as it might be to believe, he also add a Car-Fax run which I greatly appreciated!
