Posi in the ice and snow?

We just got our first snow of the year and the first I've seen with the GMC. I was wondering if anybody has feed back about the handling in the snow. I've got the 8.1 Allison, 4:10 gears with posi. So far I've only had it off road, and no problems in the muddy slushy stuff. Running 235/85/16 Cooper MS.

I once had a 2wd '63 Chevy with a 4:56 Detroit locker in the rear. It was helpful for getting out of the ditch, but was also the cause for entry. Never had a 4X posi?

Thanks

FYI: 11.5-13.5 mpg depending on conditions........... :seeya:

You are 100% correct that a locking rear end can cause loss of control especially when cornering from a dead stop. However it can lead to fun and spirited driving with a litlle throttle control, just be careful it doesn't cause you to spin out of control.

When in 4x4 though, the truck will dig much better. It may cause a little 4 wheel drift under heavy acceleration. If you find that any uncomfortable situations are happening, then it is very easy to regain control by letting off the throttle until the tires start to bite, and then easing back into it to make your corrections.

This is the reason GM Lockers desengage above 20mph. It is easier to control with only one tire spining. With the 4x4 this will not be as much of a concern.

what tires do u have the all season or the all terrain? The stock All season tires on the HD's just plain suck in the snow. If you have them, you're better off driving your FWD car to work.

long as you go real slow, and there isn't much snow on the ground, and you don't have to go up any real steep hills, a fwd does good. I wouldn't buy a 4x4 just for the snow. oh you have to have the right tires. the long lasting touring tread junk don't work good.

the worse tires I ever had on a 4x4, were some desert dogs or some thing. tread kinda of reminded me of dog bones. they did pretty good on the street. but in a 6 inch snow or mud they had a problem with direction. If you spun them fast enouph they move, but you never knew for sure if it would be forward, backward, or one side or the other. most time it was combination of them.

but what I've read they was designed for sandy type areas, not tn pasture fields, guess they'd done a lot better in the desert.

The G80 locker doesn't disengage at speeds over 20 mph. This is a common misconception about the G80s. The rear wheels must be spinning less than 20mph for it to engage, but once its locked it will stay locked WAY past 20mph.

Right, it won't disengage once you hit 20mph, but it will not ENGAGE at speeds of 20MPH and over.
