Plastic black trim grey?

Hey, found a great way to turn your black plastic trim back to good old black and with out chemicals. Not sure if it was posted before, I didn't see it anywhere.

My 91 Jetta's plastic molding around the wheel wells and door trim was just about white. then I read on the VWdiesel forum about using a propane torch to renew it. Well I figured I didn't have anything to lose so out came the torch.

WOW, what a difference. No sooner did I touch the blue flame to the plastic trim and it turned a nice deep black again. Now I did this as a last minute thought on my way into the house to get ready for my daughters dance recital. Needless to say my wife wasn't to happy with me. Once I found out how well it worked I did the entire car. Now I wish I took before and after photo's. If I had a way to post an mpeg I would take one with my digital camera while cleaning up a friends truck. His is white and when I showed him on his how well it worked he couldn't believe it. I guess I could work on his some and film it as well. I just don't have a way of posting it. If you do try it just be carefull because you will MELT the plastic if you hold it on to long.

Call me crazy, but isn't all of the darker black colr that you're seeing now is a little thing called carbon? I mean, if you burn most anything, it turnd black because of the carbon in the plastic?

I'm not a chemist, but that's my theory on it.

From my understanding all the heat is doing is turning the faded plastic back to it's original state. If you did it you would understand. It looks just like it did before it turned white. I didn't have much to loose on my Jetta and it turned out great. All I can say is it worked great for me.
