center console wont open, 40/20/40 seat

I know there are others that have had this same problem. My brothers '01 1500 had the same problem. They gave him a new console lid under warranty a few years back. His original one was cloth on top and the new one is vinyl on top. My '01 2500HD has had the vinyl lid since I owned it. Well, it wont open at all right now. I know if I beat it up enough, it will open.

What is the trick to fixing this once and for all?

How can I get it to open when its being stubborn?

I dont think this contributes, but my 35lb Beagle likes to sit on the console(down position) while driving so he can watch out the windshield. My brother doesnt have the dog sitting there and his did the same thing. That leads me to believe its not the Beagle.

TIA

I have had to rebuild mine several times. As said before try flipping it up and done, there is a 'ball' or detent that prohibits thge lid from opening when it is flipped up.

When open you can snap the lock out and you can give it a good cleaning and perhaps a little lube and it should once again work.

No if I could get the cheap plastic squeak out of it I'd be a happy man.

How do you snap the lock out? I poked around and cant seem to get the latch mech. out of the console? You are talking about the latch thats in the bottom of the console, not in the lid, right?

Well, I popped the latch cover off the console bottom today and figured out why this doesnt work. Its a crappy design if I say so. Two pieces of metal have to slide against each other on an upward incline ramp to unlatch the console lid. I guess I'll try some lube and see how it does.

One question along the way. When I popped this open today I have one metal strip that I cant figure out where it should be. Its about 3-4" long, its curved/bent, and has a loop on one end. Its probably some sort of spring helper dealy, but all the pieces came flying when I popped it open today. Didnt quite see how it all goes.

Anyone know where that strip of metal goes in the puzzle? TIA

When I had my old truck the console always screwed up

I end up take the part you pressed in out. There was a metal lever left that you press up

It would up much easier after that.

I noticed that, and considered that option too. Im going to give it another try with the normal push button. Once I popped everything out I was opening and closing it the way you described.

Now if I could just figure out where the 4" curved strip of metal with the loop on the end goes?

Hi Matt, I had the same sticky inoperative latch on my '01 2500HD....after much abuse and cursing I finally got it open.I simply put a small dab of antiseize down where the catch mechanism is and it has been working smoothly ever since..with the console lid up look down into where the catch is ,there are 2 opposing hooks and put a small dab of lubricant between the two pieces of metal ..hope this helps..Ed

GM had a bulletin a couple years back on this. Bulletin#02-08-49-007

It said to lube the latch with Dri-Slide Lubricant GM part#1052948.
