Fuel Injection Types

Hope some of you more experienced folks can help me out. I had a great experience with a 1996 C-1500 5.7 liter w/ multi-port fuel injection.

I am looking to buy a late model Tahoe with the same engine. Today I open the hood of a 1998 for sale and its got what I think is Throttle Body fuel injection.

1. Did GM use this type of fuel injection in 1998?

2. What differences am I going to see in reliability? Low and High end power? Cost of repair if something does go wrong? Longevity?

Thanks for your wisdom

I would have thought that it was an engine swap. However, the vortec housing is on the vehicle. Just not in the location that it was on my 1996? Now I am really confused?

Are you sure it was a 98?

Aside from a smattering of 2-doors with the 6.5L diesel, all Tahoes 95-99 have the 5.7L V8.

95 had the TBI and 96-99 had the Vortec CPFI (central port fuel infection)

The newer body style 2000-up hav either the 4.8L or the 5.3L V8.

TBI engines have a round breather much like carbed engines did. 96-99 Vortec have a thottle body that points up. The newer LS1 style engine (00-up)has the throttle body mounted on the front of the engine.

The breather box on a 96 is slightly different from the 97-99, but it is hardly noticeable.

The owner claims its a 1998. I first thought the engine looked too small for a 350 but, it has stickers on the front that say 5.7 liter. It has been two years since I sold my wonderful '96. I now own a 2003. It is entirely possible that I am just not remembering the layout of the '96. However, I do know the difference in the outer housing of a throttle body. It looks a lot like a carberator. This '98? that I looked at today had that same appearance. I think I will try to look at a few other '96-'99 GM 5.7's and determine if this truck my be older, has had an engine swap, or I am just not remembering things correctly. I appreciate everyone's help!

A 96-99 Tahoe engine compartment should look like this:

Here is a 95 TBI:

Thanks Everyone! Especially 99-2door. This gets me straight. It was the correct MPFi all along. I guess the old memory is getting...well, OLD.

actually....there are some 99 and up runnin' around with the 5.7L. I believe they are overseas models and possibly Mexico versions. I think we even have a memeber on here with a 00 Sub with the 5.7?

:troll: Well if you want to get technical about it there are several domestic examples of the 5.7L in 2000 models (Z-71 Tahoe, Tahoe limited, Escalade, Denali) , but since he was asking about a 98 it wasn't really worth going into all the detail.
