I bought Enamel 1200 degree paint and put 4 layers on my headers. As soon as I fired my truck up the first time the paint immediately burned off. Is there any paint you recommend that would withstand the temperatures the headers produce? Thx

I'm not trying to be a smarta$$ but did you take the original coating of paint off prior to adding the heat resistant paint? If not, that's why the high-temp paint burned off.

 

I put VHT on my Edelbrock TES I had on my old Sonoma. I had them sandblasted first and put about 5 coats of the VHT on. I then baked the headers in the oven at work at up to 1000 degrees to condition the VHT prior to installing the headers (so the VHT wouldn't chip or rub off during install).

 

The VHT held up pretty well for about the first four years but then started showing rust. You're better off getting ceramic coating if you want it to last. If not, just let them go.

Hey there,

I was going thru the same thing a while ago. I'm more into doing things myself and wanted to coat my headers in my garage. I looked at paints and do-it-yourself powder coatings but finally went with JetHot ceramic coating. I would VERY MUCH recommend it! At first I didn't have the extra cash to get em coated so, although the new headers were beggin to be installed, I waited til I had an extra $175 to burn and sent them for coating. It's only been 6 months or so and they obviously look new.

 

I know this doesn't answer your question directly but my money is on the ceramic coatings.

I second that...Jet Hot is the way to go. Every paint I tried burned right off, I had a set of headers for my street rod coated...looks awesome

Spend the money on the JetHot, well worth it!
