another tire question

hey fellas, another new guy here with a probable redundant question. just bought an '02 2500HD 4x4 crew cab with the wimpy 245's on stock rims. does anyone know what the rim width is? and what tire size can i go up to on these rims safely? i would like the beefier look of a 285 but hear it's not reccomended.

any thoughts? i am going to mod the exhaust with the magnaflow dual and probably an air filter mod as well. any thoughts on the various filter mods out there? thanks for your thoughts....

The rims are 6.5" wide. Alot of people have 285's, but I stuck with 265's for towing purposes. The less tire you have turning, the more power you have. 265's fit nicely, but a 285 works also if your tire guy will mount them. I feel if you tow heavy, you are better off with more power than a bigger look.

Like was already mentioned, the stock rims are too narrow for 285/75/16's. I know alot of people are running them with no problems, but some tire dealers will not mount them because of reason mentioned... I'm running 265's because I also tow a heavy load. They really help fill up the wheel-well nicely.
