1157 or 2357 light bulbs?

I needed to replace both light bulbs in my turn signal. The manual called for 2357 bulbs. I took the bulb with me to the local gas station since this was the only place open at that time of night. All they had were 1157 bulbs. I compared it to the 2357 I had and I couldn't tell the difference. I bought the 1157's and installed them. They seemed to work just fine. Does anyone know what the difference is?
