HD factory wheel width

Ready to get me some 305/70/16 at/s goodyears like I had on my last HD...

tire dealer says that the alum rim on the HD is not wide enough

I said, "I ran them on my last HD"

He said they are not wide enough...

my question is, does anyone know for sure if GM has made a change in the width of an HD wheel from 02model to 05 model? They look the same to me??????

TIA

Nope no change - What you have is a case of a tire dealer doing a little "CYA"

Technically he is right - if you gots to have them go to a different dealer or buy some wider rims.

Don't get me wrong, you very well could have a dealer just trying to wedge you into a new set of wheels.

But at the same time 305's on a 6.5 inch rim is getting pretty dicey in the rim width to tire width ratio. It also effects tire wear and ride quality by changing the tire and sidewall dimensions from manufacturer spec. It may easily have been a dealer that is not willing to compromise that far in order to limit problems both liability and customer satisfaction. There are a lot of people running tires like this, but that alone doesn't guarantee that it is optimal for any given tires performance.

Most tire manufacturers recommend at least an 8" wheel for 305s I think. Just a matter of some shops will install them on OEm rims and some won't.

Would 285/75s be noticably better (from a rim width perspective) than 305/70s? On one hand they're narrower. On the other hand, will more sidewall make them look more like ATV tires?

They don't have more sidewall. Yes they will fit much better and have better wear characteristics. a 305 mm is .8 inches wider than a 285mm tire, which is pretty significant.

Shotgun, sure looks significantly nicer than stock!!!

Ric, already changing the tires eh?! The mod bug never dies! Hmmm... wonder if there are 305's that'll fit my stock 17s without having to lift it.

I always put the 305/70's on my chevy's as soon as I get them home because I cannot stand the chinchy tires you get from GM

a few twists of the torsion adjusting screws and voila! complete new look (like shotgun's)

chinchy is right. I'm just to cheap to change them tires out right now. And mine came with the chinchy & wimpy passenger tires.
