Saturday I'm going to pick up my 2002 4WD Duramax short bed extended cab.

Any known areas I should pay close attention to when I inspect the truck?

I'm a former GMC tech (used to work on the 6.5TD all the time) but I've never looked at the dmax.

Thanks.

Check the rocker panels, door edges, and all lower body stuff for rust/paint defects. It seems to be a pretty common problem here in Colordo. Check the tailgate cable, ask if they have been replaced (it is a recell thing). Throw an after market fuel filter for water on the truck, injector issues with water or debris in the fuel. Also check every light on the dash to make sure they are working, check the dash for paint peeling, and every knob on the AC or radio for peeling.

Scyry is right about faulty injectors on the DMax in 01-02 but the filter change usually does not help. Water passes the filter and settles in the injectors because of a bad design. There is a GM extended warranty that they will give you if you start to have injector problems( 200K, I think). As for the tailgate cables being replaced. Don't take the salesman's word for it. Take it to a GM dealership and have the VIN# looked up, that will tell you all of the warranty and recall work done on this truck. Have any available recalls performed on it and you should be good. Overall the DMax is a very sound motor and good design. The complaints are rare and few compared to other diesels. The Allison is also very mechanically sound.
