GM Recalling 193,000 Cars for Safety Defects

Thursday, February 10, 2005

DETROIT — General Motors Corp. (GM) is recalling more than 193,000 vehicles on the U.S. market to fix a variety of safety defects, federal safety regulators said Thursday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (search) said the recalls included one covering 155,465 pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans that may suffer hydraulic fluid leaks, causing increased steering and braking effort and potential crashes.

Models affected, all from the 2004-2005 model years, include the Avalanche, Express, Kodiak, Silverado and Suburban from GM's Chevrolet division. GMC's Savana, Sierra, Topkick, Yukon XL and the Hummer H2 were also affected, NHTSA said.

Separately, the agency said 19,924 Cadillac SRX and Cadillac XLRs, along with Pontiac Grand Prix models from the 2004 model year, were being recalled because of potential problems with their accelerator pedals.

Lastly, NHTSA said GM was recalling 17,815 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Isuzu Ascender SUVs from the 2005 model year because their windshields may not have been mounted properly.

"If a crash occurs, the windshield may not be retained, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant," NHTSA said.

GM, the world's largest automaker, recalled more than 10 million vehicles in 2004, in a year that saw a record number of recalls across the industry.

Sounds like 2 recalls in 1. Windshield and fluid leaks. Wonderful. Still haven't gotten my tailgate recall notice on my 04.

Thanks for the headsup.

I have signed up at MyGMLink.com which is a GM Owner's Center, and they

have listed for my 2004 Sierra, a Recall ID: 04007 which is:

Reason For This Recall:

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2000 - 2004 model year GMC Sierra vehicles. On some of these vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. If one cable fractures, the remaining cable may retain the tailgate in a horizontal position. However, if the remaining cable is sufficiently weakened by corrosion, it could fracture within moments of the first cable fracturing, especially if there is a load on the tailgate. If both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper. Anyone sitting or standing on the tailgate when both cables fracture could be injured by falling from the tailgate. On vehicles that have had the bumper removed, the tailgate may drop even lower. Additionally, if there is cargo on the tailgate, the cargo may become unstable and fall if the support cables fracture.

What Will Be Done: Your GMC dealer will replace the galvanized support cables with stainless steel support cables. In addition, the tailgate hinge will be inspected and replaced, if necessary. This service will be performed for you at no charge.

Until stainless steel support cables can be installed on your vehicle, do not stand, sit, or apply loads directly onto the tailgate when it’s in the full open (horizontal) position. This will reduce the potential of personal injury and damage to the outer panel of your tailgate. Additionally, when loading or unloading cargo from the pickup box, the tailgate should be removed. Please see your Owner’s Manual for tailgate removal instructions.

I haven't received anything about the recalls on the Hydralic Leaks just yet.

They have my VIN and send me updates on recalls for my specific vehicle.

It must be the leaky hydro-boost units.

Yahoo has a story on it but I lost the link. They said something about the brake recall is only for trucks that had Boush brake units.

Here's the Yahoo story:

GM Recalls 155,465 Pickups, Vans and SUVs

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. is recalling 155,465 pickups and sport utility vehicles — including the Hummer H2 — because of possible brake malfunctions, the world's biggest automaker and federal safety regulators said Thursday.

All of the affected vehicles are from the 2004 and 2005 model years and have Bosch hydro-boost brake assemblies. They are the Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado and Suburban; the GMC Savana, Sierra and Yukon XL; two commercial trucks, the GMC Topkick and Chevrolet Kodiak; and the Hummer H2, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (news - web sites).

NHTSA said a pressure accumulator in the braking system could crack during normal driving and fragments could injure people if the hood was open. The crack also could allow hydraulic fluid to leak, which could make it harder to brake or steer and could cause a crash.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said the company did not know of any injuries related to the problem.

The automaker is expected to begin notifying consumers about the recall next month. Dealers will replace affected brake systems for free, NHTSA said.

GM shares rose 15 cents to $36.75 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites). They recently traded at a 52-week low of $35.85.

This is why none of our dealers will show our trucks as having a recall yet.

I can't even log in to mygmlink.com. I believe they have an overload due to people looking up the recall. I just bought my new 05 Silverado 2 days ago and would like to know if its included.

I was able to get in, but nothing was listed in the RECALL. This recall is for the Bosch hydro-boost units which is not used by the 1/2 ton rigs and by the new Crew Cab 1500 Z71s. Whew! We're safe, guys!

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors said Thursday that it will recall more than 155,000 trucks and SUVs, including the high-profile Hummer H2, due to potential brake problems.

Along with the H2, the recall covers 2004-05 models of the Chevy Avalanche, Express, Kodiak, Silverado and Suburban, as well as the GMC Savanna, Sierra, Topkick and Yukon.

Bosch hydro-boost brake assemblies found in these vehicles could cause injury to anyone nearby if the pressure accumulator cracks and separates with the hood open, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Web site. The crack could also cause hydraulic fluid to leak.

"The loss of fluid would cause increased steering and braking effort and a crash may occur without prior warning," federal regulators said.

General Motors (GM: news, chart, profile) , the world's largest automaker, plans to begin the recall in March.

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
