Transmission Slipping in Low Gears

I don't know the type of tranny - but it has 16 bolts and is a shallow pan.

Here are the problems:

1. The tach shows an idle drop from around 700 to about 400 when placed in either D or OD. When in park or neutral it shoots back up to around 700. (The idle seems low to me even in park).

2. The tranny seems to slip from 1st to 2nd when raced. It also will redline the tach when gunned in the lower gears but not so much in the higher gears.

I just did a tranny filter and fluid change hoping this would help solve the problem, but instead it seems to have made the slippage more apparent.

What's the next step for the tranny? Do I need to take it to a shop or is there more I can do at home? Are the idle problem and slippage related or if not, what do you think is causing the idle problem?

What's the mileage? Sounds like your frictions are going which meand rebuild time. You could try a shift kit as it may buy you a little more time by increasing line pressure.
