HELP!!! with R&D headlight controller.

Recommended Posts

I just installed the R&D headlight controller kit for my 2000 Chevy last night (the kit that keeps the low beams with the high beams). It works ok, however, since the install  the "service 4WD" light stay's on. After the light came on I tried to put the truck in 4WD and it panel blinked for a while and wouldn't work. I then turned off the truck and waited a few seconds, then restarted it and everything worked ok until this morning, that's when the light came back on. This has never happened until I installed the controller, and I'm almost certain it has something to do with this. I checked the fuses and they are ok, any idea's would be a great help.

Is there a chance it might be just a coincidence that it came on then?  I didn't have any problem with mine when I installed it.  The only thing I can suggest is look the installation over real good and make sure everything is connected where it should be.  I'm sure you've probably done that already, and I know you said it worked ok, but just an idea.  Also, look to see if maybe another wire somewhere near the installation may have come loose.  As a last resort, you could remove the kit completely and see if the "Service 4WD" light still comes on.  I know that would suck though.  I don't really know what else to try, but if I come up with, or find out anything else, I'll post it here.

Anyone else have any ideas to help out Smitty?

Thanks for your help Tom. I think I will check over everything tonight, I was thinking about using different connectors for the wires, the connectors supplied in the kit don't seem to make good contact and are cheap. I will also check to see if any other wires came loose. If this doesn't help I will uninstall the kit and see what happens. But like you said, this could just be a coincidence. The fact that the 4x4 was failing, then after restaring it worked like nothing happened.... that what throws me off. I think if the headlight kit caused this it would have blown a fuse or something. Has to be a loose wire. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Your problem is most likely very simple. It was not present before, but only after the install.  I don't know if you know if you are colorblind, or not. I am! I have trouble with light green and gray, among other things. Get your instructions and a female (since color blindness is a recessive trait, they are carriers and  it is only expressive in a very minute number of women-essentially zero percent). Make sure the wires you spliced into are actually the correct colors.

I know this may too simple to be possible. But, it is just a suggestion. Hope you get it fixed soon (you will) and let us know. Good luck.

I think I fixed the problem. When I was leaving work yesterday the "service 4WD" light came on again. I put the truck in park and proceeded to put it in 4x4, it worked after a few tries, however, after this I couldn't get it out of 4x4. So I opened the hood and hit the elec box a few times with my hand, then I started the truck and everything appeared ok again, switched back to 2x4 with no problems. After this I figured for sure there must be a loose connector or something. When I got home I opened the elec box to look around and noticed one of the connectors outside the box wasn't "snapped" in all the way. I snapped the connector back in place and checked out everything else. It all appears to be ok now, no 4x4 problems. Thanks for the suggestions guys:D
