Steering tightens when putting in gear?

I know they all do this but why? When I turn the steering wheel while changing from park to drive my steering tightens breifly. Why would this happen while I am in 2wd? I guess I just don't understand how the 4wd works?

Just a guess, but I think it may be the fact that your engine slows down when shifting into gear, therefore less engine rpm means less power assist for the steering.

Bingo, less rpm for the p/s pump the less power stering you have.
