Well between most of you guys and a buddy of mine running it plus all the articles I've been reading I finally changed over to MOBIL1 5W-30 over the weekend with almost 11,000 miles on the clock.

I never thought I would and even made a long post in another thread on here as to why I wouldn't (such as over 225,000 miles on my ol' 88 Corsica using nothing but 5W-30 Pennzoil) but from everything I read it seemed like the only way to go!

I'm still going to change it every 3,000 miles though,I couldn't bear to leave it in there more than that.

I just hope I'm not sorry I did it and even if I am I got some guys I could blame, right?

Good for you! Now you need to allow yourself to be unbrainwashed and leave it in there untill the change oil light comes on. I know you can do it

What it has been proven that the change oil light is pretty much worthless and to never go by it!Some poor smuck on the colorado boards went by that stupid oil change light and not knowing anything about mechanics of a car let it go till the light came on at 12,000 thousand miles!Well a brand new engine later lets just say that i doubt he will be going by that stupid oil life system anymore!

Im with dale every 3k the oil is coming out, why be cheap with oil changes they cost barley anything compared to the damage that can be done by being cheap and letting it go another 3k or sometimes even more!Your oil mabey able to still be up to par but no way in hell the filter can go that long without being changed.

I disagree about the oil life monitor. It has actually been scientifically proven to be extremely accurate. The incident with the Colorado may have been a bad monitor (he got a new engine for free anyhow) or simply a forum fib (you never know who whether people are making things up or not) . Anyhow, I think the idea of the monitor is great and I have chosen to put faith in it on my 04. I had trouble with it on my 02 because there was no percentage indicator like on the 04, so I ended up changing the oil pretty much at the 3k mark. On my 04 I trust it more because I can scroll through the DIC and see that it is working.

You're definately wasting money if you're changing Mobil 1 at 3k. You might as well go with a good dino oil such as Pennzoil, Chevron, or Halvoline. Any of those dino oils will go to 5k miles themselves. You're gonna be throwing alot of money away if you don't at least take the Mobil 1 to 5k.

Also, the "oil life monitor" is nothing more than a light that is programmed to go off at predetermined intervals. There is no sensor, etc to evaluate the condition of the oil or such.

You need to go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and get an education on oil. There are plenty of people that run these motors and have done many used oil analysis after many more miles than 3k.

Good for them they can save there 15 bucks  every 4 or 5 months by going past the 3k mark, i rather know for a fact that the oil in the engine is in good condition along with the filter which is not rated to go past 3k!There are more things then just the oil that need to be checked out or maintanced at every 3k interval also.

Philosophy and upper end is what drives me to use the best engine oil I can afford.

I drive my vehicles ***HARD*** most of the time, expect a lot from them all, and don't know when I'll be driving it even ***HARDER***, so want the best in there.

I know a computer scientist who drives a 70's criteria Honda something or other. Never changes the engine oil or filter. Leaker so he puts in 2-3 quarts every 3-4 days. WallyWorld jug oil on sale is what he buys. Think the stuff I toss out is better than what he buys new. Anyway, it works for him, as he drives more mildly than an old lady.

My vehicles get pushed to the limits, often. Want/need the higher spec of synthetics for "those" times. Regular times just about anything that is clean and not loaded with solids is okay.

Many of the 1,000,000 mile **CARS** use mud hen dino oil. Key for them is that they all changed their oil and filter in the 3K range, religiously.

I'm now noodling switching form Mobil 1 synthetic to diesel synthetic, which has a higher spec.

Most "normal" engine wear is at start up after sitting off over nite. The oil in the engine drains back into the pan. Dry start. Metal on metal. Othewise when running, there should be ***NO*** metal on metal. There is an oil film at all times. But when running fast and hard, there is a chance to go metal on metal.

Also at the higher end usage, the temps are also pushing the limits. Also why I like higher spec.

Any oil with a higher film strength, higher temp range, etc (higher spec) "helps" in this regard.

Just because I also change my synthetic out at around 3K-4K-5K or whenever I notice oil consumption, doesn't mean I'm wasting it either. Sure maybe most of the time the stuff still has a "bit" more life, but cheap insurance compared to an engine rebuild and the stuck in the boonies factor. Key for me is when mine starts to consume, which means the oil has sheared down (lost it's film strength).

LOL, the filter works in conjunction with the oil. I was just expressing my opinion, you're more than welcome to throw your money away. I'm sure Mobil and whatever filter company you use will appreciate.

I've used Mobil 1 at either 5k or 7500 miles and the vehicles have went up to 180k miles when I sold them with no problems.

Hey it doesnt bother me what you do with your truck, you can call me stupid for changing it at 3k and ill call you cheap for trying to stretch it out! :D

Come on, do some research before saying that the oil life monitor is worthless. This site has a copious amount of discussions regarding the legitimacy of the system. Also, feel free to change the synthetic oil every 3K - that's exactly what Mobil wants you to do. With synthetic oil comes superior lubrication and extended longevity, but it’s your truck and money.

I also find it hard to believe that the Colorado guy went 12K until the light came on. All of my past and current vehicles with the monitor usually reach 0 at about 6K (Yukon XL, Escalade, 2500HD and 2 Suburban's) I'm sure your report is credible, but the owner of the Colorado is more than just mechanically handicapped if he went that long on dino oil.

I'm still going to change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles,For all it cost and piece of mind theres no way I'm leaving it in any longer.(its my truck and I make the payments :uhoh: )

And as far as the oil life monitor all of our information here at the dealership says it should come on no later than 7,500 miles and if it dosen't then theirs a problem with it.

Yes im sure mobil executives are jumping up and down right now reading this post knowing that they will get a additional 30-40 bucks a year out of me!

And by all means trust a oil life system that has 0 clue as to what condition the oil is actually in!

You're missing the point. $30-$40 from you, your nieghbor, your nieghbor's nieghbor...

If you like, please read on. I pulled this from another thread. It actually covers some of your thinking. Please take into consideration that the system is ignorant when it comes to telling the difference between Synthetic and Dino - it's running its analysis based on the recommended dino.

----

The typical recommendation made is to change every 3000 miles, which is a conservative approach that is typically accepted as the industry standard by those who sell oil changes for a living. Their common rationale is that frequent oil changes are "cheap insurance" for extending engine life. $20 to $30 spent for an oil change might be considered cheap, but this can amount to hundreds of dollars spent over the life of the vehicle with no benefit realized. To gain the best value from the cost of an oil change, the mileage between changes should be maximized as long as there is no adverse effect to the engine. Not only does this approach save money, but it also helps to protect the environment due to the reduced consumption and disposal of used oil.

Researchers learned that oil degrades in a predictable fashion and that monitoring a few engine-operating conditions allows oil life to be determined quite accurately. Specifically, the engine computer monitors engine speed to count combustion events while also estimating oil temperature based other engine operating conditions. From here, the computer is able to determine the rate of oil deterioration and notifies when to change oil. This software based GM Oil Life System is part of the same computer that also helps to control engine functions and is now available on most GM vehicles. With this system, the guesswork of knowing when to change oil is removed....

Check out BOB IS THE OIL GUY For discussions and testing of various oils both dino and synthetic.

there are testing reports for extended drain intervals for the various oils (including Mobil 1) from reputable testing labs such as BLACKSTONE-LABS

I have just changed to Mobil 1 EP (w/ a little over 1,000 miles on it) and plan on changing the filter at 5,000 miles and sending a test sample to blackstone at the same time for analaysis. They will tell me whats happening with the oil and what the life left in it is.

I was a die hard fanatic of changing my oil every 3,000 miles (allways used dino oil) but after some investagating and research I have found that using a high quality synthetic like Mobil 1 EP you can have better protection and longer oil life.

If you ARE a nut about oil changes you owe it to yourself to do some research. the 2 links above are a few good places to start.
