Brake Pad Life

Hey Guys,

When I was at the dealer yesterday getting a new rotor and the e-brakes replaced, they told me I have 8mm of pad on the fronts and 5mm on the backs. My question is at what point do I need to change the pads? Also, how thick are they new?

Sounds like you are about .30 inch in front and .20 in back. They must be getting close to the metal "squealer". When I put mine on I think they were about .60 thick new. Curious, why was the rotor replaced?

had to replace the rotor because the clip failed on the e-brake (apparently, a common problem with these trucks) and it tore up the rotor. The other side was fine, but they also replaced the e-brake on that side.

the rotor was half the cost of the job -- about $200. Wish it could have held out until I do my brakes because I may just replace both rotors and pads when I do the rears.

I usually wait until they start to make noise, then I change them right away. I always have the parts sitting is the garage ready to go.
