Silverado problems

Hi all-

First of all, I'm a new member and want to say that this site is great!

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with two problems that I have been having.  I have a 2001 Silverado 1500 LS that has 7K miles on it.  I have been having terrible rattles between the suicide door and passenger door.  Anyone else have this issue.

I also am very worried about a sound that just starting coming the rear of my truck (I think)  It usually happens when I start accelerating from a complete stop.  This sound is very hard to explain but its almost like a short hmmm sound.   When I hear this sound it feels like it has a loose bed or rear end or something.  I can actually feel the bump when I start accelerating.  Maybe it is a rear diff. problem.  I'm not sure?   Can anyone out there please help me!!!

is the noise between the doors a creaking sound?

my '00 had this problem, and it nearly drove the dealer

nuts. they finally replaced some weather stripping and a

slight adjustment on the latching bracket.

my '01 had a slight sound similar to yours, but after they

lubed the anchoring points of the leaf springs, the noise

dissapeared.

For that rear end bumping- You might start by checking the spare tire to make sure it's nice and tight up underneath there.  My owners manual says to check this fairly frequently so it might be common for it to loosen up and swing around under there.

As for the passenger side door/suicide door rattle- One way to isolate the source of that is to have a passenger use a piece of plastic hose (mines 1/2" diameter but a 3' piece of garden hose will do) and with one end held up to their ear, probe for the noise spot along the door edges while you drive around.  It works like a doctors stethascope.  Once the tubing is near the point where the noise is generated, it'll come through the hose load and clear.  At least that'll pinpoint the location of your rattle.

Hope I've helped.

The sound from the rear of the truck may be what Tom here had on his, caused by missing isolators or something like that.  I'm not completely up on the new light duty pickups, so I'm coming from straight memory here.

Mine didn't make the noise I was hearing when going from a clomplete stop, but when gong over bumps or dips in the road.  It was a metal to metal kind of clunk.  The rear springs were slapping together.  The dealer put these Spring Insulators on the bottom leaf's, and it cured my problem.  They may help when going from a complete stop though.

I'd have the dealer realign your doors for you.  I had to have this done on my '00 Silverado on both sides.  I also had a rattle on cold mornings inside the door itself when I traded the truck.  I never had it fixed but if I had to guess, I think it was the rod that runs from the inside handle to the latch on the top of the door.

shaners- how did the dealer realign the doors?.....i mean

since the door hinges are welded in place for both the

front and rear doors, what was the realignment process?

I'm not exactly sure what he did.  Maybe he just adjusted the latches?  Either way it got rid of the groaning noises when the chassis flexed...

Yes, the sound from the suicide door and passenger door is a creaking sound, it drives me crazy.  As for the spare tire solution, I have not checked it out yet, but I will tonight after work.  Another question about the realignment on the doors. Is this a long process?

Realigning the doors does involve adjusting the latches since the hinges are welded.  It's not that hard, especially the bottom latch for the 3rd/4th doors because they are easy to get too.  The upper latch on the 3rd/4th door had to have the plastic cover on the headliner removed to gain access to them.  The cover is held on by some strange, fragile plastic clips.  They are easily broken, I found out the hard way. :)   If you take your time, and be careful, it can be done fairly easy.

My truck had the rearend noise (and still does).  The dealer lubed the driveshaft, and that helped for about 3 weeks, then it started again.  Feels/sounds like it is slipping, and makes a chirp kinda noise.  If we are talking about the same thing

Anyway, I am looking into an aftermarket driveshaft, and hope that will cure my woes.  I don't want to have to take it to the dang dealer all the time.

Good luck.:)

Shaners- thank you for the reply, and since i'm new here,

let me also say that this looks to be a great site with

some enthusiastic members. willing to share and help each

other.

01chevy- if you are experiencing the creak and groan noise,

one quick step in isolating a latch related noise is to

take some 3M plastic tape and wrap a couple layers around

the latch bar at the top of the cab. mine went away as soon

as this was done, indicating that the top striker needed

adjustment.......obviously things loosen up. another

related item is the weatherstripping that tends to dry out.

when we applied the silicone grease (actually- Dielectric

tune up grease)to all the stripping, the cab became as

quiet as new. my '00 was a year old when i bought my wife a

'01 (yep, she wanted it), and the first thing i noticed was

how quiet it was inside over my truck. being "anal" about

things like this, i went through all the efforts to bring

my truck back to new status.....also, the weather strip

maintainence is called out in the owners manual.
