Tailgate Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Was loading my 650+ pound ATV into the back of the Silverado on Saturday and the ramp spun out from behind the tires and the ATV slammed down on the tailgate and it is now a V shaped tail gate. Any Suggestions? Aftermarket tailgate? Anyone know around about how much a OEM tailgate is?

I don't know about aftermarket tailgates, but when my neighbor purchased his 2002 last year, it had the composite tailgate. It looks nice and you can hit it with a baseball bat an not hurt it. He's a painter and is always throwing ladders and stuff in the back, with no problems, he has dents in the to of the box rails, but nothing on the tailgate.

I don't know of anything aftermarket but it's worth checking into it.

Head for the bone yards and see if you can find one because it will be cheaper than a new OEM one. You might also consider removing the T gate in future during load. If not possible in your application you might line the Tgate with 3/8 or 7/16 inch marine grade plywood to offer protection against collapse in the future as it would stiffen up Tgate a lot.

How did he get the composite tailgate without the composite box?

I mean, I guess you could just go buy one...But that would rather cost prohibitive compared to a regular old tailgate. The only (composite) tailgate that I've found for sale was $499 used.

Use www.car-part.com I just looked and there's a chit load of them in Portland for $250-$350. These are used salvage yard parts, still good, hech better than yours.

I just got one and its all they say it is - I can put my ATV on top and have the whole bed for storage.
