B&B triflo vs magnaflow

I'm interested in the finish/fit/sound of the exhausts, as i know both will make about same hp/tq.

since i don't know anyone with either on a 5.3 04 truck i'd just like to hear some opinions. How loud compared to stock on idle part throttle full throttle for both of these, and if you can try to describe the sound (hard to do) such as low rumble raspy ect.

I just had a magnaflow w/ custom bent pipe and stainless steel z28 tips installed on my 00 5.3. Idle, sounds beefier than stock, you can tell something has been done to the truck. I can tell you it gets pretty loud on normal acceleration w/ the windows closed, you have to stop the conversation, really resonates in the ext cab, but once od kicks in, you'd think it went back to stock. It's not hollow sounding like flowmasters, not raspy like a glass pack, i think it sounds like a deep C5 vette. When you get on it, man, it sounds really really good. W/ the windows open it just puts a serious smile on your face. I have a wav file of my truck i just made tonight to send out to my friends, I can send it to you if you like along w/ pics of how I had mine routed. magnaflow has some videos on their site, but doesn't give you a good idea of how it sounds inside. If you know about air pressure or db's, I have a meter, can measure how loud it gets on the way to work tomorrow if you want.

no idea on db's..... i'm looking for something that sounds beefier than stock at idle and roars at full throttle..... sounds like magnaflow again.... my old setup on my 99 T/A was hooker long tubes ORY and magnaflow catback sounded awesome, but with a truck i don't want anything that loud.

BTW should i buy the catback or just muffler and have a shop bend the pipes, and which muffler / tips recommended (i'm thinking 2 out the back about half way under rear bumper) if anyone has or could point me to some pics it would be appreciated.

I couldn't find anything I liked straight off a catalog page, so I went to a muffler shop I knew did good work and got them to bend it all up. Only thing, the catalog stuff is mandrel bent, so you get a little more flow.

as far as dbs go, I'm guessing you were probably hitting 120-140 db in the ta, probably to the point where you didn't want to drive w/ a headache / made people wince. in the truck, w/ stock manifold, stock cats, your looking around 100 db or so.

Here's my setup, everyone has em coming straight out the back, I like to do things a little different.

Now that it is a nice setup, Hotwire. Duals out the side will usually be louder than out the back, am I right? I have mine out the back, but I was thinking of changing them to come out the sides instead. I really like those tips. Do you get a lot of dings from rocks hitting your tips?

(sorry to hijack this thread)

lol, not sure, just got it put on Monday.

they're stainless steel, but have a black chrome plating, so I'm not sure how long they're going to last although I shouldn't have to worry about them rusting. The plating is really sweet looking, almost looks like glass when you look at them. i have always had tips doing 90s right after the tires, just like that a lot better, keeps from carboning up whatever you're towing too. Last set I had like that were on a 97 s-10, had chrome baloney tube tips that lasted well over 7 years before they rusted from the inside out, they were rock chipped in places, but so was the whole truck. ;)

It does make it a little louder in the truck, that way I can annoy passengers, people beside me, etc. keeps people from pacing you and keeping you out of a lane, also sounds good under bridges and concrete barriers.

This is how I wanted it done, but they didn't have enough room to tuck it, this was my 89 s-10 w/ a fuel injected lt4 (ran 13.4 in 1/4) I sold due to my new daughter.

Oh god. If its a battle of B&B versus Magnaflow.... B&B TriFlo all the way!! The sound is second only to the Corsa cat-back. Nothing sounds as good as the B&B or Corsa muffs. NO, not even Flowmaster.

YOU ARE NOT HITTING 140db!! I fly a Blackhawk and its about 132db at fly, you arent that loud unless its open headers and even then you only gonna get close at WOT.

FYI.....On the decibel scale, the smallest audible sound (near total silence) is 0 dB. A sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful than near total silence is 20 dB. A sound 1,000 times more powerful than near total silence is 30 dB. Here are some common sounds and their decibel ratings:

Near total silence - 0 dB

A whisper - 15 dB

Normal conversation - 60 dB

A lawnmower - 90 dB

A car horn - 110 dB

A rock concert or a jet engine - 120 dB

A gunshot or firecracker - 140 dB

You know from your own experience that distance affects the intensity of sound -- if you are far away, the power is greatly diminished. All of the ratings above are taken while standing near the sound.

Any sound above 85 dB can cause hearing loss, and the loss is related both to the power of the sound as well as the length of exposure. You know that you are listening to an 85-dB sound if you have to raise your voice to be heard by somebody else. Eight hours of 90-dB sound can cause damage to your ears; any exposure to 140-dB sound causes immediate damage (and causes actual pain).

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
