2wd lift?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, i new to the off road scene so i know it might be a dumb question, but bare with me, im learning here......

now i know its dumb to raise a 2wd truck, because it is not a 4x4, but since i didnt know to buy a 4x4 to raise it, im stuck w/my silverado. and im getting to like her alot too, plus its hard to find a 4x4 in my part of the woods.

so my question is this, i want to raise my truck up but i dont know where to start looking for kits for my truck. can ya point me in the right direction? also i want ur input & opinion on raising a 2wd. im not actually gonna go muddin of rock crawlin, i just like having a rased truck cause i like high trucks, and if i ever get in a wreck in the street, i know im less likley to get hurt since im higher than a normal vehicle.

any ways, thanx for the input in advance guys.....

Nothing wrong with lifted 2WDs :D

Lots of kits available for our trucks, from full-on lift kits to springs and ACOS spacers to lifted spindles (would be my first pick for mild lift).

A well-driven 2WD with a locker can go 99% of the places an average 4x4 can go.

thanks guys for the input.

what i wanted to do is lift it like 5' with 33's 12.50s. is that pretty tall enough? since i have like only a thousand to spend for now on lift/wheels/tires, what is the best way to approach it? i wanted to put the main things on first like the lift and tires, so that i dont have to put it in the garage for like days without a ride. then from there add the little things in as i still drive it to work(locker, ect. ect.).

whatcha think?

Look around on eBay, but KNOW what your wanting, as in add-a-leafs or a spring pack or shackles or blocks (my opinion- stay away from blocks).

I'll tell ya now- a grand ain't going far....

I'm about to drop a little more than that on my Cherokee. Been hunting eBay and specials. Goona take every penny for alift, wheels and tires and steering components. I think full-size parts are even more $$$

Good luck. Make sure and take lots of before and after pics.

witch do u think gives better soft ride out of the add-a-leafs/spring pack/shackles/blocks, but that will also handle some good off terrain IF i needed to go through some?

ive checked out some products, and decided to go w fab tech 3'' basic, and i went to supension connetion, and i like there body lift kit. what are ya's input on this set up?

when the body lift kit say "comes w/everthing needen to complete instillaiton'', does that mean it comes with all the hardware that needs to be extended(steering column, ect. ect.)?

i say that right there will run me $600.

i could probably install the body lift my self, be that i will read s**tload of info on installing bodylifts before i do, but does anybody know how much it will cost to have someone put the suspension on it? of can somebody direct me to a very detailed site that gives directions on how to put a fabtech 3''inch basic on a 86 chevy silverado?

thanx a bunch in advance guys, im learning something new on lifts & off road suspension everytime i get on this site!!!.........

AALs are okay if you have good springs to begin with, but they will raise the rate and make a rougher ride.

Shackles are cool with good springs, keep the stock ride, get the lift.

A lot of guys like blocks, personally they'd be a last resort for me. Up to 2" is alright, after that I think they suck... They can easily increase the potential for spring wrap on tired springs, or even good springs with too much block. Plus they just don't seem like the most secure form to me.

Spring packs, with out a doubt, are the ideal replacements. They're designed for their application, usually have features like teflon between the leaves, poly bushings and even military wraps on the end. But of course, they're $$ compared to the other three...

For true off-road, packs, aal, shackles...... blocks if they're small. I don't think 6" blocks belong offroad :D or anywhere else....

Personally, I don't like body lifts. Thusly... never really looked into them. I've seen some say they come with the stuff you mention, some don't, so I'd have to assume you'll have to address it one way or another. Call the manufacturers and find out.

Depending on your experience, installing a lift isn't hard. It can be done alone but would help to have assistance.

what about leaf spring hangers???

are they any good? i think they basically move the position on both ends of the leaf springs more closer to each other so there is more arch on the leaf spring, wich raises the rear, right?

heres the discription they put down. tell me what ya think MrQuadrasteer:

1973 - 1991 CHEVROLET C25,C35 9" OR 10" LIFT FRONT & REAR HANGERS WITH SHAC

Lugs: 8 $289.00

SKU#: X2HANGM7391RX9B

ALL CHEVY 2WD LEAFSPRING HANGERS

Front & Rear leafspring hangers are THE WAY TO GO! Lifts your truck without changing the ride, besides leafsprings are expensive to buy and ship

hangers=shackles

I think for your truck it's gonna be 4 extra-long shackles, or hangers. There are better routes, but depending on how hard core you're gonna be, might work for you. You'll have to get longer shocks or make extensions for your stock ones. Steering will have to be addressed. And 9 or 10 inches is a lot !!

Consider what you want to do with your truck and look to get quality stuff. If it means waiting, then wait. You'll spend less in the long run because after you break all the cheap crap, you'll buy the good stuff you shoulda got to begin with !!

Study-up before you spend any money. Read the magazines, find a forum that covers offroading- only a million out there !! There's more to it than you might think.

I'm new as h3ll at this, so don't take me for any seasoned veteran or anything- far from it !! I've just been reading for a little over a year, every mag I could get, got a jeep and spent a bunch of time at jeep forums. Forums are great for learning new stuff- find the forum that fits and read your butt off !!

Anyway, hope that helps. Not trying to discourage you, but would rather you did it right, and more importantly- SAFE !!

Check out my old gallerie of my 00' it had a 7 inch Fabtech lift with 35's and 18 inch wheels.

That should answer your question.

Power transfer loss is a definite. You will be adding much bigger tires on your truck effectively lowering whatever gear ratio you have now. If you have a 4.10:1 you will be OK with 35's, as you will still have a fairly decant amount of get-up-and-go. But if you have the same gearing as me (3.42:1) you will not be breaking any 0-60 records any time soon. your fuel economy is going to drop due to the added stress required to spin those tires up to speed, plus the aggressive thread its self will decrease your cruise economy. Also, with a much bigger wheel and tire, your breaks will wear faster and it will take you more distance to stop. These are things you need to know before you start driving and running over little smart cars at the stop lights...LOL

All in all I think it looks good and would definitely do it, I am putting spacers in the front of my truck and going to a 33" tire

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
