Hello, this is my first post to this msg board and I was just wondering if there were any owners of the Colorado/Canyon trucks that would be interested in sharing how they like their trucks. Preferrably Z-71 owners because that is the model that I am considering. Thank you for looking at this post and hope to talk to you soon about the trucks.

What do you need to know? Or what are you interested in?

I have a 5 cylinder 2WD Z71 Extended Cab automatic with a 3.73 rear. The ride is superb, the engine is far from anemic and the automatic is, well, the same automatic GM has been pushing since time immemorial and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's going to give me years of service. I've had absolutely no major problems with it whatsoever and most of the people over at ColoradoFans.com/CanyonFans.com haven't either. Not to try to steal traffic from this site, but as it's a specialized board specifically for the twins you might find more information there.

I've got 8800 miles on my '04 Canyon. It's a 4x4 Z85 3.5/auto with 3.73's. The ONLY complaint I have is that the gas mileage isn't what they claimed it would be. Other than that, it's been a great truck. I've towed 3500-4000lbs with it quite a few time and it's done great both and power and braking. The only thing that departatly needed upgrading from stock was the crappy 235/75/15 general tires they put on there, they suck! I bought some 30x9.5 A/T's for it, much better traction and appearance.

Actually my dad is considering to buy one of these with the I5, 4x4. It will be used mostly for commuting but he does go fishing and sometimes will tow a small boat.

Is there anything specific we should be looking for in a used truck? Any known issues with these engines to look for?

What kind of fuel economy can one expect with the I5, auto, 4x4? T

Thank you for any replies.

I have an '05 Colorado crew cab, no Z71 or 4x4. It's okay. Nothing really wows me but it's a nice truck. If Chevy still made S10 pickups, I would prefer a S10 extended with a 4.3. I've had several of those plus a blazer or two, and I really like the S10... and the 4.3 engine.

Some things I don't like... the arm rest on the door is hard as a rock. It's basically hard plastic with fabric... zero padding. I have the 60/40 seat (manual) and it's not the most comfortable in the world. It has more fore and aft adjustment than any I've ever seen. I'm 6'2" and it can go too far back even for me. I don't know what kind of mileage I get because that's not a big concern for me. Whatever it is, it is. I'm only 3 miles from work so I don't put many miles on it.

The motor is strong (5 cyl), and though it's trivial, I don't like the sound of it on accel. Reminds me of a rice burner for some reason. The traction control is kinda weird. Sometimes things will hit just right on a 1-2 shift and I guess the tires go to break loose and the traction control kicks in. Man, it's like someone threw an anchor out the back.

I like the radio with it's ability to play MP3 CD's. I have one CD with six Led Zeppelin albums on it and I think that's pretty cool.

Thanks for your input, I was out at the local GMC dealer today (Bob Ross GMC) and liked the Ext cab 4x4 Z71. I would like to get the I5 motor but I too like a v-style engine like 4.3, but that motor is so outdated, it wouldnt be worth putting into that truck, what they need is the I6 from T-blazer/Envoy. Just wish that the price tag wasn't so high

Go to the colorado forums and you will find the in depth answer on why there is no I6 in the Colorado. Suffice to say it will not fit. And even if it did, it would not be a ideal engine for truck use. If it was the Trailblazer platform would not now offer the V8.(which is what they need in the Colorado too, but that is a discussion for another thread.)

I have a 04 Crew cab Z71 :fume: that I replaced my 01 Sonoma crew cab with. I have not found much to complain about, I bought it 7/1/04 I have 33K on it now and have had 1 warranty repair on a fuel vent solenoid.

I average 19-20 per tank, but 3 weeks ago I went to SE Iowa and logged 2 tanks at 24.5 and 24.7 mpg :D . The best I ever did with the Sonoma was 18.5 on the hwy and the 3.5 I5 has way more lowend balls than the 4.3 in my estimation. My son can't touch me with his S10 ZR2.

I like the extra room in the box and the cab over the old Sonoma but the fuel economy is what really sets it apart as I used to average 16.5-17mpg :wtf: with the 4.3.

It makes me grin evey time I get in.

Listen to Dave. He knows what he's talking about. If you haven't already, go to coloradofans.com. Lots of good info there.
