Engine Coolant Flush

I was reading my Helm's manual today and see where it says not to use a chemical coolant flush. Anyone know why and what harm may have been done if one used the Prestone or Zerex cleaners?

THAT MAIN REASON THEY SAY NOT TO USE A CHEMICAL COOLANT FLUSH, IS DUE TO THE CHEMICALS THAT ARE USED CAN DAMAGE AN ALUMINUM ENGINE BLOCK AND HEADS. IT CAN CAUSE CORROSION AND EAT THOUGHT THE ALUMINUM.

 

NOW IF YOU HAVE ALREADY USED A CHEMICAL FLUSH ON IT THEN MAKE SURE YOU FLUSH THE SYSTEM WITH LOTS OF WATER. THE BEST WAY WOULD BE TO PULL THE THERMOSTAT AND BACK FLUSH THE SYSTEM ALLOWING WATER TO RUN THOUGHT IT FOR A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME, THEM FILLING UP THE SYSTEM WITH DEX-COOL AND ABOUT 30,000 MILES LATER DUE ANOTHER COOLENT FLUSH OR JUST A DRAIN AND FILL...

 

WHEN IT COMES TO MANUFACTURE RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE I PERSONALY DO IT IN HALF THE TIME, WHEN IT COMES TO COOLENT, DIFFERENTIALS, TRANSFER CASE, AND TRANSMISSION FLUIDS INTERVALS

Thanks for the reply. I must admit to using the cleaner on my 99 but was getting ready to drain and flush the 02 with a new thermostat today when I noticed the warning. I use the Prestone back flush kit on all my vehicles and think I did a pretty good job of flushing out the cleaner after driving it 3-4 days with the cleaner in it. I'll just do another drain and flush next year without the cleaner from now on. I guess it pays to read the manual every once in awhile.

YOU CAN DO ON CAST IRON BLOCK ALL YOU WANT, BUT JUST AS LONG AS YOU DO THE RECCOMENDED MAINTNASS, CLEANERS ARE NOT NECESSARY, EXCEPT THE ENGINE I DO RECOMMEND ENGINE FLUSHING (THE BILLSTIEN FLUSH IS ONE OF THE BEST) AND NOT ONE OF THOSE YOU DUMP INTO THE ENGINE RUN IT FOR 5-10 MIN AND THEN DRIAN YOUR OIL

That test was rigged then or a flat out lie because they are both based on Ethylene Glycol, only the inhibitors are different (Dex i Cool is supposed to have better protection for aluminum) so you can mix them until the cows come home and NOTHING will happen unless someone rigs it. I have Dexi cool in two vehicals and I raised the mixture to between 60 and 70% Dexi to water and one is now 5 plus years old and the other 4 plus years old and both are as clean as day one with no sediment and clean reserviors. I have little doubt that eveyone that has had a Dexi problem has had in a in a 50/50 mixture or less because with the amount of aluminum present in a modern engine you should run more than 50% regardless of where you live.

I will know who used not enough antifreeze in the engine and to much water. When you do not use a high enough mixture of antifreeze in a engine that has aluminum and cast iron part the reactivity between them will wear the coolant out sooner. EVERY sytem that I have ever torn into that has had problems, somebody has tried to save a few pennies and not use enough anitfreze in them and the water (which is VERY reactive when aluminum and cast irn ar mixed together) starts to break down the parts into solution and the clogging starts. If you use 60% or better dexicool with distill water you will not have a problem and if you mix it with regular antifrreze and only have 40% or less water present, you will not have a problem either. The claim they the two together from plugs and clogs is rediculous. Some people use tap water and that some of which is pretty nasty itself to begin with PH or suspended mineral wise. Use distilled water in mix and the water will have less reactivity to begin with and blend nicely with antifreeze. For the record, I have mixed Dexi and regular Ethylene Glycol coolant and I have also mixed Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol (which is non toxic unlike Ethylene Glycol) with no problems at all but it has also been with water consentrations of 40% or less and I have been using the Propylene Glycol in a few test apps for about 12 years now. I have a old tractor that is a collectable (51 years old) that I use between 70 and 80% antifreeze in it that I put in it 19 years ago when I got it. I top it off from time to time over the year but the coolant is a clean as the day I put it in and it has maybe 600 to 800hrs of run time on it too in 19 years.

This is a myth. They are both based on the same glycol with just a differnt additive package. I honestly think that some of Dexi's bad rap is because when it came out, engine were also had more aluminum in them and greater reactivy and GM did not ship them with a high enough concentration of dexi vs water from factory (because they figured that they could save tons of $$$$ buy cutting corners here) and it failed sooner than normal.

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
