Transmission trouble

I put the truck in reverse and I could feel a problem. It felt like something in the rear end was broken. I put it in park and I could hear a knocking sound. When I put it in any gear the knock goes away. But when I start and stop there is a clunking sound and feel from the rear. When I get up to speed everything feels normal. It sounds like something is broken in the transmission and banging around. When I start or stop it feels like the driveshaft is not balanced and the truck hops. I'll be at the dealership Monday morning.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

The transmission and driveline on these trucks is fairly noisey.  The noise in reverse is something others have discussed.  Mine makes a noticeable clunk when being put into reverse.  Also, the clunk when starting and stopping has also been documented.  The usual fix is to grease the splines or the new tsb says to replace the slip yoke with a newer nickel plated one.  Still trying to talk the dealer into that.  That's probably what I'd suggest when at the dealer...tell them you're experiencing "Driveline Clunk"

I heard from the dealership today. They said a carrier bearing in the transmission broke. They said it took out a seal also. They rebuilt the transmission today and will have the truck ready tomorrow. They said they have seen lots of tranny probs with these trucks, but the carrier bearing failure was a new one on them. I know about engines, but I don't know anything about automatic transmissions. Can anyone tell me what a carrier bearing is, and what it does?

The reason your drive shaft felt unbalance is that in a way it was. The carrier bearing you spoke of is the bearing that is holding the middle of the 2 pc drive shaft. If it is bad it will allow the drive shaft to flop around like a fish. CLUNK....BANG.

ahahha  alot of tranny troubles doesn't even touch how many they have had   you want to hear about real trannny trouble..

13 days after I had my truck, bought it with only 3 miles on it..  it starts stalling, and slipping out of gear.

2 days later, when going into 2nd it dies..

same day drop it off at the dealer..  next morning get the call that  the whole tranny is dead,  1st, 2nd, 3rd, and reverse are all out.

now comes the fun part  they actually wanted to put a rebuilt trannsmission into the truck that my parents paid 36K dollars for..

after a few threats of the lemon law, and some good choice words,  I have a brand new jet trannsmission in it lol

haven't had a problem yet.

The carrier (aka planetary assembly ) bearing is a flat needle type bearing callled a torrington bearing which sits down inside of the planet. I have seen these bearings fail from time to time. When they do fail, it damages the planet, ring gear and sun gear because the needles come out and mesh in with the gears and break off or chip the teeth. They have just started using a thicker bearing in the front and rear planets to help with this problem.
