Changing gearing on Late Model Suburban

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys, 2003 Suburban, 2500, 4x4, 6.0, Posi rear, 3.73 gears.

I want to go to a 4.10 and get a little more towing capacity out of her. Was wondering if it's a straight foward ring and pinion change front and rear or is it going to get much more involved. Do 4x4 shops do alot of these gear swaps or should I just use my local mechanic? I just want to make sure the job is done right! Also can you verify the speedometer can be recalibrated through the computer??? If so can you also recalibrate if I go up a size in tires? Thanks,

I recommend a 4X4 shop or specialty gear shop. I had mine done by a local 4 X 4 shop. I used a hypertec to correct my speedo for the gearing change and tire size change, if you don't you will get an ABS light. Hope this helps

If you are going to a bigger tire at the same time I would recomend 4.56's. Just for sake of arguement let's say you have a 31"tall tire on now. So 31 and 3.73's are stock. If you go to 4.10's and 33's. The taller tire turns your 4.10's to an effective ratio of 3.70ish. It would take 4.56's to eqaul an effective ratio of 4.10ish. As far as gears/install a reputable shop with a good warrenty is best. Not a job for the average do it yourselfer.

Thanks. What did the installation run you??  Also, any gear manufacturers to stay away from??

I would recommend Yukon or Auburn gears and It ran me around $1500 for the front and rear parts & labor.
