Thermostat

I ordered a high pereformance thermostat online from Summit Racing. According to the site, Perma-Cool, Mr. Gasket, etc., all make the brass high-flow style. Now that I have it I checked the Helm manual and it indicates that the thermostat and housing cannot be separated and are replaced as a single unit. Before I unbolt the housing, does anyone know if this is true or just a ploy by GM to get you to buy the whole housing?

What thermostat/housing would be recommended then? And where can I buy it?

On my 01, the thermostat and housing are 1 integrated unit. I opted for a Hypertech 180 degree replacement that I believe I got from Truckperformance.com.
