Intake Shoot-out w/Dyno sheets

So here it is, long overdue. I know a few of you were waiting for results... I hope you waited !!! It'll be worth it

This chart was when the truck was new, at about 6k miles. All stock except the Volant. 47* degrees, low humidity, DynoJet dyno. I remember the day- it was running great. Sweet air that day. And the truck got to cool almost to the point it was too cool right before pulling.

(I posted both of these cuz one got jammed or something in the printer and got extra numbers printed on it)

Here are three consecutive pulls from Wednesday. Terrible day for dyno'ing- 95+ degrees, high humidity. Truck was running okay, about as good as can be expected in Texas heat.

Pull #1 is Wester's tune and Volant

Pull #2 is Wester's and stock airbox

Pull #3 is Wester's and aFe intake

I went from 235hp and ~280tq stock to 302.8hp and 328.6tq, gains of about 68hp and 50lbs of torque, with an intake and tune... for less than $1000 :D !!!!! Wanna talk bang-for-the-buck ?!!!!!?

The Wester's tune alone was worth 53.2hp and 45.7lbs over stock (and with a slightly better than stock intake :P:D )

The aFe was worth 14.6hp more than the Volant, 20+hp over the stockbox !!!

And, even better, the aFe moved my torque peak down by 400rpm, from 4100 to 3700 rpm- way cool :D It jumps out of the hole so much harder now !!!

And- the thing screams on top !!!! There's noticeably more response and power everywhere with the aFe over the Volant. The thing sounds awesome, combining with the tune and stock exhaust for exactly the kind of sound I like- quiet most of the time, very noticeable growl at heavy throttle, and a sweet wail at full throttle and 5000+rpm :D:D:D

It is a WAY-sweet system, the way all the pieces fit together make for as seamless a transition as possible from part to part, whereas if you look at the stock intake- and the Volant, since it reuses some of the stock couplers- there will be about a 1/4" ridge the entire diameter of the tube, in two places, totally disrupting and obstructing air flow. The aFe is super-smooth, all the way thru, with no obstructions at all. A very well designed and thought-out system, and a very high build quality- it has a wicked aluminum venturi piece that throats down the filters HUGE opening. The filter also pulls from the top as well as the sides. And the main tube has a small indention molded into it to clear the fan shroud. The Volant did not and was so tight, I had to take an Exacto knife to my shroud and trim it back. Again, very well thought out. I give it :flag:

And, uh....

Anyone still doubting Wester's abilities ?!!?

While I agree the intakes probably did a little better because of the tune, and the tune did a little better because of the intakes, there is still just no denying the results. Like someone once said, there are crappy turbos and blowers that barely beat these results :P !!!!!! Nothing comes close, value-wise. Nitrous may be cheap horsepower, but it's not even a consideration for most, and to do nitrous correctly... ain't cheap.

Now, I know comparing one dyno to another isn't always a fair comparison, but let's consider- it was COLD during the first dyno- great air, and was over 95* and high humidity during this last round (and forgot to add, truck didn't get to cool too much between rounds, considering the ambient temp). Both are DynoJet dynos, and my G-Tech has always confirmed whatever numbers I had at the time. You can see (till I change it :P ) in my sig that the G-Tech claimed 282hp, and it was actually 288. G-Tech manual states it will always be lower than a true dyno, since the G-Tech has to overcome wind resistance where a chassis dyno is stationary, sooo...... I'm quite comfortable with these numbers :D

Hey, Chad, where ya at ?!!? Satisfied :P

Oh... and everyone's results may vary... but these are mine !!!!!!

302+ at the wheels :D:D Wait till I get serious :D !!!!!

Hmm... I see them, but I loaded them.... copy and paste the properties in the address bar.

At least I would have known to do that  !!! YOU SUCK WORSE !!!!!

Thanks, I'll fix it ;)

I get a security error when I try to paste the url...

Alright, fine

I tried to cheat and just link them. I'll load them on to my own space later and redo it....

Hey- going to HRP. Anyone down ?? I'm leaving here in a few minutes...

Did you get to run any times @ HRP ?

I saw the members over at LS1Tech giving you a hard time on your Dyno numbers. I hope you got some good times to shut them up.

Dyno #'s are hard to compare when two different people are dynoing. Some can Lock the Torque Converter for about a 15-20 HP gain while others leave it alone. Thunder Racing here in Baton Rouge will do it when asked OR when you are comparing your stuff to theirs. You gotta watch them.

However, I can't see your dyno tags, but you did write your gains. I have a stock intake on my truck right now and your gains from the Volant to the aFe are impressive. Do you have a pic of the aFe system or maybe a link to them?? You gains are undeniable if the same guy tested them.

Alright, can y'all see 'em now ??

100R1, nah, didn't make it to HRP, got too late. Went to HMP instead, but got really lame numbers- 10.3's. I've gone 10.02 there before, with 2.2 60' ON WHEELSPIN. Last night, best 60' was 2.35 with no wheelspin...

It was hot and VERY humid and sh!t just wasn't running as well as I'd hoped. Pretty disappointed with the results

Next time !!!!!

vhato, I know what you're saying. And how much you wanna bet that even if they were on the same dyno, but 1.5yrs apart, it'd still be questioned, and somewhat justifiably. But by the same token, with all the other support I have for the numbers, in the way of G-Tech and timeslips and just how the danm things runs, I'm still comfortable with the numbers fairly accurate.

The intake shoot-out numbers, I can't see how anybody could question those at all- same day, dyno, operator... truck !! Hey- heat-soak, included ;) !!!!

The aFe intake just flat kicks-ass !!!!!!!!

The intake system looks like this:

50054-10092.jpg

but I have this kind of filter:

54-10712bsm.gif

I'll get a few pics together on this, on the MASSIVE obstructions created w/in the stock and Volant intakes here in a bit and post them for y'all ;)

Bottom line, WITH GOOD DOCUMENTATION, the aFe laid waste to the competition !!!!!!!

And, overall, Wester's makes ALL the difference

does that filter ever get dirty/wet when you're driving in the rain?

I have thought about putting an intake on with the Nelson tune over the stock airbox....

Posted

HD, getchya a better breathing intake- it'll make a huge difference. Like the tune will compliment the intake, and the intake compliments the tune :fume:

I can't say with 100% certainty that it won't ever get wet, but I think it's pretty unlikely except in the worst conditions, like maybe splashing huge puddles at high speeds type stuff. It's in the stock location, the 1/2 box it mounts with covers a lot of gap... and there's just a bunch of junk in that area to block it. I'm not really overly concerned with that.

When I get ram-air, then I wonder what you do in heavy rains ??

try this.

LS1Tech just changed the truck boards to a stand-alone sight. Mighta screwed that first link. If this link doesn't do it, it's got basically the same title as this one.
