what's in a tune up?

I hope this is the right forum. I have a 2001 2500HD with the 6L gas engine.

I"m trying to figure out what constitutes a 'tuneup' these days. Besides

spark plugs & wires what does one check on an engine with injection instead

of carbs and apparently no distributor? How do you check ignition timing

without a distributor to rotate? Is the only option now to take it to the dealer

& plug the engine into their expensive diagnostic computer?

thanks,

Fuel injector flush is the next most important thing. A new fuel filter. Air filter. PCV valve if equiped. Clean the MAF. Check for vacuum leaks. Change the coolant. 100K would be a good time to replace the cam and crank sensors.
