Odd Radio Problem

I have a 2003 Sierra 2500HD with the Bose in dash 6 CD changer with Onstar, steering wheel controls but no XM (atleast yet). So far I have had this problem 2X and the dealer could not find any error codes when he scanned it. The problem is that the radio appeared to be working, showing station info or track depending on the mode but it was not playing any sound at all. I could switch bands or even hit the Onstar button and again not sound at all. Both happened from a fresh start up, once after sitting all night another another time sitting for just like 10-15 mins when at the store, and both seemed to fix themselves sometime later. Just shutting it off and immediately restarting didn't fix it but starting it later (alteast 15mins in one case and 4 hrs later in the other) had the radio working again.

Any ideas???

Thanks

You have to feed the secondary hamsters (usually found in the dash, vice under the hood) in order for the peripheral electronic systems to work.

No clue what so ever but if it makes you feel any better, the exact same thing happened to my 6 day old work truck last week.

I fixed it by turning the truck off and turning it back on.

This bulletin is being revised to clarify the models and the approved repair procedure. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-08-44-020A (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

Condition

Some customers may comment that at times there is no audio out of any speakers. However, on the next key cycle the audio system may perform properly.

Cause

An anomaly within the amplifier/radio operating systems may cause this condition.

Correction

Important: Pay particular attention to this correction procedure, it is somewhat complicated. The repair varies based on the vehicle sound system. Refer to the Service Parts Identification (SPID) Label of the vehicle being repaired. The type of sound system in the vehicle will determine the repair procedure.

Determine the regular production option (RPO) code of the sound system in the vehicle from the SPID label.

Install the Tech 2® to the vehicle DLC and determine the part number of the radio software and the amplifier part number.

Refer to the tables below to determine the correct repair(s).

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Wow GM-Tech, thanks for the reply with the TSB in it. When I took it in to my dealer, they scanned it with a Tech2 and found no codes so didn't really do anything more. Is there something else they can do to check it being the radio was working when they tested it? Unfortunately both times it didn't work they were closed. I have noticed that it doesn't seem as loud either, but thought maybe it was my imagination until these 2 times it didn't work at all.

Mine came back after restarting too but not right away, IOW just turning off the key and immediately restarting, it seemed to have to sit awhile before it worked again. I guess that GMPP may pay off :seeya:

My (early build) 2004 has done this once. I pulled over in a parking lot, turned the ignition off, then restarted the truck and everything was fine again. So I guess maybe some early 2004 vehicles inherited this same issue.

Anyway, other than the one time mine's been fine.

Good luck with yours bigdogs.

If it's working when you bring it to them, there is no test they can do, but they should just go ahead and reprogram it since it's a known issue.

Thanks for all the info on this problem. I have printed out the TSB and will go back the dealer and see if they will reprogram it (Does that just consist of hooking it up to a Tech2 for a few minutes or ???) and see if that does the trick. I guess atleast they can document it and then if need be order the new amp.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
