firstruck Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 I need to replace the front (and maybe the rear) brake pads due to a rattling from my current ones. (probably low quality, ill fitting aftermarket jobs) Any suggestions on best/worst? would perfer a low dust pad. TIA
MS3DALE Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 I would use the "OE" GM ones (NOT THE DURASTOP's,If they try to sell you the Durastops's tell them no thanks!,We've had lotsa' trouble with them) The OE ones are a bit pricey but last a long time

TIA <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i used oe when i did my rears with no problems. for the fronts, i used hawk pads and i havent been too happy with them. they have LOTS of brake dust and squeak like crazy. my original fronts lasted for 120k, so i vote for oe's..

DEV1ST8R Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 What's the cost of the OE pads? Can you only get them from dealerships?
MMM Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 With 85,000 miles on my original front pads and still going, and rear pads lasted 50,000, this would be an easy choice for me. MMM
PbFlinger Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 My vote is OEM. Mine generate very little dust, no noises, work the same regardless of the weather (some performance pads I've run on other vehicles were very weather sensitive, and would grab very bad when cold/damp, then squeal when hot). My OEM's (01 2500HD 4x4 crew) recently howled the tires during a "panic" stop on the freeway. Had my cruise set @ 73 MPH & a deer ran out in front of me. Worked well enough to "lock " the wheels (antilock engaged) on a bone dry concrete road @ 70+ MPH. What more could you ask for out of a street pad? (Also, love that Hydroboost! I'll never own another vacuum boostered truck). Plus, get this. I recently was doing some PM on my truck at 100,000 miles. I had looked at the pads when I got the truck (~ 30k miles), looked brand new. Figured the PO must have just replaced them (Now I don't think so). Looked at them again at about 50K & 75K miles, looked ok. Bought new OEM pads for the 100K service, planning to change them as a matter of course. Surprise! Removed all of the pads, and compared to the new ones the THINNEST pad had 30% wear (measured with a micrometer). Now, I'm pretty easy on brakes; but man, these things will go 200K easy. I put the old ones back in & threw the new ones in the cabinet for another 100k miles. They are pricy (about $230 with tax for both axles, at TBA Oil & Warehouse in Indy). Well worth it for my money. I could have got "performance" pads for less than half the price, but for my particular use I can't imagine a better pad, so I bucked up & got these again. One caveat: I rarely tow or haul any real weight, so I can't comment on their heat tolerance.
100R1 Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Does Raybestos still Mfg the pads for GM trucks ? I'm looking at the Raybestos Quiet stop ceramic pads. Have used them on other trucks (non-GM) with great results and a decent cost from Pep Boys
