Tranny Noise?

Hey Guys,

First off, I must say that this site is great.

Now, the transmission in my 1992 Silverado makes loud noises when I shift gears.  The Transmission In the Truck is the New Venture 3500 (Getrag) (RPO MG5).  The noise sounds like a "Clunk".  I also have a very difficult time shifting into first when the truck is sitting at a red light.  I checked the transmission fluid and the clutch fluid and they are both fine.  Any suggestions as to what is causing this?

Thanks

Funin,  First off welcome...

How many miles are on the truck and is it still the original clutch?

I've been driving "slushboxs" for a long time now so here is a shot in the dark.  My first guess is it is a clutch problem...

My second guess:  Does the truck make a whirring noise when you sit in nuetral and engage and disengage the clutch?  If so then it is probably your throw-out bearing.

Hopefully someone here with a little more recent experiance can help confirm this for me.

First, Welcome.

Have you had the fly wheel off? Oterwise, I think Shaners is right on with places to start looking.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies.  I was talking to a friend and he thinks it's a clutch problem as well.  The truck only has 88,000 original miles on it, and as far as I know, it does have the original clutch in it.  As far as the flywheel goes, I don't think that was off either.  I only had the truck for a month and a half.  The truck doesn't make a whirring noise when you press the clutch.  It does, however, make a "clunk" when you press the clutch in while in reverse and in first.  It sounds like parts of the clutch are hitting together.  The funny part is, the clutch doesn't slip or chatter when you pull out.  One more thing- reverse gear wines. It almost sounds like a foreign car when in reverse.  Is this normal?  Enough ranting for now.

Thanks,

when sitting still try putting the transmission into one of the higher gears, if it goes in easier, your first gear synchronizer is probably worn out or broken. if this is the case it may make it easier to get in gear, if you drop it in a higher gear and then put it in first. if it's hard to get in all the gears it could be a clutch problem. if the clunking noise is present in all the gears, check the rest of the drive line(loose u-joints, play in rear end) if nothing is present, it is probably time to get that transmission checked before something serious happens

The wirring you hear is prob normal.  It seems all chevys wirr a little in reverse. Now a dumb question but try and listen closely while your drivinf along. Do you hear a little for the lack of better words a slight "tinkling noise" with your foot OFF the clutch???If so it's definetly the throwout bearing. But from what your describing it does sound like a clutch problem as the other guys have said.

Good luck figuring it out.

I agree with most of the posts here. At 88k, I say it's time for a new clutch
