Summer Cleaning

Well, I know I have read somewhere that said a K&N filter performs better when it is dirty, but I have lost 100 miles per tank in the last 3 weeks. I changed the O2 sensors upstream, replaced a few exhaust gaskets (I heard a Leak, I thought) and I figured that I would look at the filter. Can you say BLACK? Not only dirty, but greesy. I could still see a little red spots now and again, but it was nasty! I cleaned it with a recharging kit in the bath tub, then I had to scrub the tub because it was black when I was done. Anyone else have any ideas about the sudden loss of milage?

I would have guessed o2 sensors. Mine lost almost 3mpg before I finally changed them out. We get winter fuel here that's good for a couple mpg loss. You have a tank on the clean filter yet?
