Can I add GM keyless entry?

I have an 05 Sierra WT that has power locks, windows, and mirrors but did not come with keyless entry. Is there a GM accessory that I can purchase to add factory keyless entry without having to splice into a million wires? Thanks.

Nope,Theres no GM Accessory keyless entry package available.

Hmmm, that's strange that you'd have power locks and no keyless.

Keyless entry is built into the PDM (Passenger Door Module). I wouldn't think they'd bother to make PDMs for power locks that don't have the keyless entry module built into them, but who knows.

Anyway, try this:

1. Close all the vehicle doors.

2. Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.

3. Press and hold the door unlock switch.

4. While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, cycle the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF.

5. Release the door unlock switch.

What happens? If the doors lock and unlock after step 5, your truck has the ability to use keyless, so you only need to buy a remote and program it.

If nothing happens, then to get factory keyless you'd need to replace the PDM (the passenger side power window/lock switches) and also get the BCM reprogrammed to enable keyless. Then the keyless entry should work.

Hey Shawn, good news!!!!!!!! I performed your procedure and the doors locked and unlocked twice and the horn beeped when the doors locked.

Now you're telling me that I can just buy the factory remotes and program to this vehicle. How do I program remotes? Thanks for all your help.

Sounds good! Here's the programming procedure in its entirety:

The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the program mode.

6. Press and hold the LOCK button and the UNLOCK button simultaneously on one transmitter. After a delay of approximately 15 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock to confirm the programming of that transmitter.

7. Repeat the previous step to program up to 4 transmitters.

8. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position in order to exit the keyless entry transmitter programming mode.

9. Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation.

Looks like you can even get the remotes for $10 or less (plus whatever shipping costs) from Ebay.

Let us know if everything works out OK 405!,I get customers in here wanting to add keyless entry on their trucks with power locks but no factory keyless entry.

Thats a cool deal if you just need to get the remotes.

Bad news. I took the #2 keyless remote for my 03 Suburban and tried to reprogram it for the Sierra. No dice. I tried several times and it won't work. Oh well, thanks alot guys for your input.

On second thought, there is a guy on ebay that is selling a replacement passenger door switch along with two remotes that he claims will provide keyless entry. I dismissed it as BS, but after this exercise it just may be plausible.

Any further thoughts?

I think it sounds very plausible. It sounds like your BCM already recognizes keyless entry, but your PDM is probably missing the RF receiver circuitry. The replacement door switch is probably what you need.

Well, I am going to give it a shot. I'm getting this kit on ebay today, should receive it later this week. Once I get it installed, I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks again for your help.

UPDATE!!!! I got the replacement passenger door module and remotes today from Jason Smith in Tulsa, OK. I purchased them on Ebay. The remotes were already programmed to the module. I installed the module and they work GREAT!!! I got just what I wanted, GM factory keyless entry. The lights flash, the horn sounds, and the locks work. Best of all, it was a plug and play operation.

YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell that it doesn't take much to excite me?

Thanks again Gnat and MS3Dale for your helpful input.

Good deal

So all you had to do was replace the passenger side door module?

Yep. I got the PDM and 2 programmed remotes. Swapped out the PDM and I am in business. This guy's Ebay name is chasnjason. He sells a ton of keyless entry remotes and has this setup as a package for GM trucks. I got the package for 49.99 plus insurance and shipping. 58 and change total. Not a bad deal.

The truck must be equipped with both power door locks and power windows for this package to work.

OK,Thats good to know that you can add it like that

Wow! Thanks to the info. all of you above provided. This is a big help to me. I just bought a 2001 Silverado that, of course, the former owner kept the keyless entry remotes for. Thanks to this thread I now know I have keyless entry.

Now I just have to call the dealer to find out if I need to order 2001 remotes or the left-over 2000 remotes that were also used in 2000. Grrr. I hate having to deal with the dealership.

405landlord,

what's the easiest way to get teh PDM out of the door? Can you just pry up the switches from the top or do you have to pull the whole door panel off? I'm really interested in buying the kit for my truck. Thanks.

    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
    • That's bad.  Like, its probably destroying the stub axle the CV slides into.   Do you have a proper lift installed with differential lowering brackets?  Did you install AT4/Trail Boss factory CV axles?
    • Hot? New Jersey? Today? I was working on my old 2000 Silverado 1500 today. Believe me, it was boiling hot today. As it has been.
