Climate Control 4 and 5 work only

A buddy of mine has a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS. His climate control dial that has the numbers on it recently started working with only the 4 and 5 settings and I was wondering if any of you guys have had the problem and if you found a solution to it that fixed it. He has only told me about it happening with the cold settings as opposed to the hot settings, but it is a pretty hot summer, so I don't think he has tested it with the hot settings. Also, I am not sure if it is related, but he is using an aftermarket HU after two stock head units (the original one for the first 135K miles and then my stock one from my 75K mile 2002 Sierra) having a problem where the number lights went out. My stock head unit from the Sierra worked great up till I took it out at 70K to give to him (I have only had the truck since 57K miles, but I assume it worked fine before that). The Sierra stock head unit went out in his truck a week after I gave it to him and he put it in after I upgraded to an aftermarket HU. Thanks for any input you guys can offer, and I hope this is the right section of the forum to post this in, I could not think of a better one.

We are talking the fan speed dial, correct? If so the Blower resistor pack on the blower motor needs to be changed. It's about 12-15 bucks. If you drop the cabin filter you should see all the green insulation from it on the filter.

I just talked to my buddy on the phone, he said he has changed the cabin filter before, but did not see the green insulation. Do you know why? Does it turn green for some reason when the resistor pack would go out? Sorry, I don't know much about it.
