2000 jimmy DRL question

Hey all,

Yeah, I'm the new guy.

Just picked up a 2000 GMC Jimmy, 4.3L Votec, 5 spd. 4X4

Wraparound pushbar, Nerf Bars, Windshield Visor, Rear window visor.

This is my second Jimmy. The first just had the 2.8L and was NO good for hauling dirtbikes.

So far the only problem I have is that whenever I use the turnsignals (during the daytime) the DRL's will go out. When the turnsignal shuts off, the lights come back on.

I wouldn't think this is right, but ??? I don't know. There was no owners manual with it.

It did have some type of lights on the wraparound pushbar, but they were removed before I got the truck.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanx for any help

Hyper

Drive it like a truck was meant to be driven !!

Sure that's a 5-speed? Didn't think the stir-it-yourself was available in the GMC utilities. It's likely the 4-speed auto. The only other thing I can think of is that you have a 2-door, not sure if the 5-speed was offered in the 2-door Jimmy even.

Yes, the DRLs function properly. I recall something about the signals being too close to the DRLs so they had to shut the DRLs off so the signal was more visible. It's a safety feature of a safety feature...

Welcome to the board...

EDIT: Just looked at your "Garage" and now realize you have a 2-door, guess the 'stick WAS offered in the Jimmy 2-door.

Thanks for the welcome Blue.

Yeah, I've had a few people say "A 5 speed?? :D Is it stock??"

As far as I know it is. I haven't checked the VIN to find out for sure though.

Do you, or anyone else here, know if there is any way to "undo" this annoying saftey feature? (without completely rewiring the lights, which might be my only choice?!)

I personally don't like the possibilities of people thinking I'm trying to signal them or something like that, when all I'm doing is turning, then have them turn in-front-of me !!

Thanks again Blue.

The light go off when the signal is activated, then come back on once the signal is canelled. They don't blink opposite the signals. As a "quick" work-around, until someone finds the more permanent solution, you can hit the dome-override button 4 times quickly, that'll deactivate the DRLs for that ignition cycle.

I know on the ZR2's disabling the DRLs is as simple as clipping one wire, on a non-z, the procedure may be more involved, I'm not sure what it is...

EDIT: Look at the sticker in your glovebox, if you see MW2 or M50 on that sticker, your truck came from the factory with that transmission, you most likely have the M50. That truck was very likely a special-order.

I did notice that the DRL don't flash w/ the turnsignal, but

I'd rather not disable the lights, but rather disable them going out at all when I signal a turn.

Maybe I'll have to get underneath it and take a look at the wiring.

Your help is appreciated Blue

I'm pretty sure the lights going out when you activate the signal is a function of the computer, need to re-program the BCM to disable that. No way a dealer will do it...

Maybe a rewire job and just hook up a seperate switch then.

And I'm sure somehow, if I hook it up to a relay, I could have them go out when the headlights come on.

As brite as the turnsignals are, I don't see it being any problem.

I'll post here again if I come up with anything that helps this, just incase anyone else is interested in changing theirs.

Yep, it's dumb but it's an FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) issue that GM had to comply with. The DRL's and turn signals are too close, or part of the same light unit so the DRL's must turn off when the turn signals are on. The function is in the BCM - you have two options:

1) Say the heck with the DRLs and disable them permanantly (resistor in the light sensor on passenger speaker grille, or pull DRL relay)

OR

2) Get a dealership buddy to reprogram the BCM, or swap the BCM from another GMT300 (Blazer, etc).. either way you'd need to reprogram because of PASSLock. Only way you WOULDN'T need to reprogram or see a dealer is to find a Blazer, for example, same year as yours, and take both the BCM AND the PCM and swap em both. Oh wait, you also have a rare 5-speed. Ugh, forget it. See #1.

This option is only 1/2 right. The resistor works for eliminating the AHL. Pulling the DRL relay MAY disable some functionality of the headlights.

So far I've just been turning the DRL's off w/ the over ride button and using aux. driving lights as DRL's.

Thanks for the input everyone.
