Max Low End Torque Tune......

Ok I have seen some of you guys get your tunes for Max Low End or Economy or full out race performance tune.

Those 3 tunes are the ones I have seen the most on this board.

With picking any of those 3 will you see a MPG increase?

Will there be an increase in performance in the Econo tune?

But my main question is what do they tune differently between a max low end torque vs all out performance. I would think since these are 5000+ lbs trucks that max low end torque would be a requirement for all out performance, since it takes a lot to get these 5000+ shaped bricks to get going.

I'm a carpet installer so I always have 2000+ in my bed. So I would want my main increase to be in low end grunt. But by doing so does that sacrifice my high end HP?

Your gonna get all kinds of replies.

In my experience, PCM Tuners and Handheld Programmers tune the engines to run with an air/fuel mixture of 12.9:1 instead of the factory 14.7:1. This means more fuel is used to get you the extra power.

If you want better fuel economy you need to be around 16-17:1 Air/Fuel Ratio which sacrifices performance alot, but can really bring up the mileage. I have heard of 3 "REAL" Miles more per galllon. However, possible Catalytic Converter damage is very likely.

The GM PCM has a "hidden, turned off" feature called Lean Cruise. This allows the computer to bascially increase Fuel Economy when maintaining a constant speed like on the Interstate, but may damage the Catalytic Converters. It allows you to have a high performance tune and a gas mileage tune at the same time. It is not legal to use, so many tuners won't touch it.

So, for the most part, a performance tune should get the same or worse gas mileage, even though many people will argue they are getting 3 MPG better and 30 more horsepower.
