Blower motor fan speed

I have a 2003 1500HD and have noticed within the last few weeks (don't drive it much during summer) that the A/C-Heater blower motor does now work when the switch is set on position 1 & 2 BUT when I put the switch to position 3 or above it works fine. I have also noticed (I think) that my horn is not as loud, does my truck have two horns?? I am thinking a fuse or something like that and maybe they are both tied together somehow? Winter is coming and I'd love to figure out the fan speed issue.

Thanks in advance

there is onlt two things that would cuase you fan speed problem. the ac control head or the blower motor resistor. 95% of the time it is the blower motor resistor which is located on the passenger side under the dash, remove the cover panel and you will see the blower motor and right next to it you will see the resistor. (note you will see wires coming from blower motor to the resistor) remove the eletrical conections and the two screws that hold the resistor and pull it out

about you second complaint is not tied to you other complaint, there are two ways to find out if one of the two horns are blown. 1st way is to put your ear nexted to the head light assmblys there is one horn on each side and have some one honk the horn, or if you can get to the horn unplug one and honk the horn and then plug it back in and do the same to the other side.

there is no way it could be a fuse due to both are on the same fuse

I have the same problem with my fan speed. Does this resistor help control the fan speed? Can it be bypassed for more speed?

Thanks

It doesn't just help to control fan speed, it IS what controls fan speed. No, bypassing it won't do anything. When the blower switch is in the highest position, you're providing direct 12 volts (no resistance) to the blower motor.

My dad has just informed me of this same problem on his 2001 Silverado.  Does anyone know the part # for this resister?  Looks like I need to order one.

I just bought this tonight, and p/n 89018596, for my 2002 Tahoe, was not correct. It was 89018597. Not sure if it's superceded or just a slightly different resistor block. But be sure you check.

EDIT: I found more info on the Pace Auto Parts website. It looks like p/n 97 is for 2002 and prior vehicles, and the 96 block is for 2003 and newer. Again, check to be sure.

not to ressurrect a dead thread, but I want to see if this is the same issue I'm having. I have a 2005HD CC 4X2 6.0. The HVAC fan speed works fine, except for the highest level. When you switch it over to "5" everything stops, the recirc and AC lights stay on, just no air movement.

TIA
