Gauge Question / Please Help

2001 Z71 5.3......My tachometer has stopped working.......All other gauges work as usual....The tach was working off and on but seems to of completly stop working......any thoughts on what it might be and what the fix will be ? Thanks in advance

here is a lits of what it could be starting with the most likely failure

 

1. tach

2. Instrument cluster printed circuit board

3. pcm

4. wire harness

Bobcat, I got in the truck today and it didnt work again but after a few miles it started moving but was very slugish for a few more miles and then it started working right.......So whats invovled with the suggestions you made? Is it expensive to fix.....maybe an extended warranty fix ?

I don't know if on occasion you heard some very quiet grinding noises coming from the tach, but there was a technical bulletin that gave replacement criterion. Apparently it is something called a "stepper motor" that operates the tach needle. God, why is everything so complicated these days?

The tacs are no longer mechanical, they are now electronic. So if it is not the motor, then it will be one of the other items listed above. I would start witht he motor and work from there.

So is this something the dealer has to look at ? Could it possibly be covered by the extended warranty ? So it wouldnt be the motor since it works half the time. Right ?

it isn't the motor so you don't have to worry about that. Everything is electrical now. What all does the extended warranty cover.
