Seafoam vs. AC Delco Top End Cleaner

I used Seafoam with not that great of a result and its kind of complicated to get it into an 8.1L because there is no brake booster line. You have to just pour it in the throttle body, which promptly shuts the engine down.

 

I decided to give the Generals top end cleaner a chance and drove down to Kurtis Chevrolet in Morehead City, NC. They had two sizes of spray - 1 pint and 1.5 pint. The dude behind the counter said that I needed the small can and promptly started ringing me up. I stopped him and told him I wanted the big can - for the big motor, being it was only 2 bucks more than the small can @ $10.77. He said that I didnt need the big can, just the small one, and continued to ring me up. Well, I was starting to get pissed by this time and told him that it was either the big can, or no can. I wanted to have some left over for a future treatment, but I guess that he wanted me to come back and buy another can. Prick. Went home, pulled everything off like the Generals bulletin stated and started spraying. Im really glad I got the big can. The stuff dont go far. I sprayed about 1/4th of a can in with the engine running and shut it off, then sprayed about 1/4 can into the throttle body and let that foamy goodness run down into the intake and eat for about an hour.

 

I came back out and started it up, went about 5 miles to burn it out. No smoke, no sputtering except for like 2 seconds when I initially started it up. In my opinion, the Generals stuff is way better than Seafoam. I still have enough left to do another treatment too. Idleing is substantially better, with throttle response slightly better. All in all im tickled.

I tried Sea foam once and it did good on the hwy, but when it came for city driving the result weren't that impressive.

I did have better luck with BG total fuel system clear. I added two bottles in one tank and notice 1-2 MPG increase, especially in city with in a week and two fill ups. The only two down falls for BG is that it’s very expensive…20 dollars a bottle and it’s not available for as a off the shelf product except in Houston, Texas. If you are interested and live near or around Houston, the product is available at the Napa store located on Gessner…around 5 blocks North of !-10 (Katy Freeway) on the Left side.

I Seafoam'd mine last night. I put it in through the PCV line. I slowly poured a little more than half in, then dumped the rest in trying to get it to shut off. No luck, so I just shut it down. Let it sit about 25min and started back up. It smoked like crazy for a good while. Took it for a drive and it smoked every acceleration. Started it up this morning and it smoked a little bit. Everything seems great. Smoother idle, less of the famous 6.0L tap, better acceleration. I'm hooked.

Also if you live in the good ol state of CA don't waste your time going dealer to dealer trying to find GM top end cleaner. It was phased out last year as CA no longer allows them to sell it. Seafoam may be going away shortly as well. Gotta love CA!
