gear train noise?

topo4u2

Question

Hey GMTECH, hows it going? Nice to know someone is around to answer a few puzzling questions.

I have only owned my 05 Silverado a few months. It has 38000km on it. I have never had it during winter. I heard its a good idea to shift it into 4x4(floor shift) once a month and drive it a couple of kms. no faster than a few miles per hour to keep things lubricated and drive it straight too. I did that today. What I did notice was that while travelling along at a slow pace you could actually hear the noise of the 4x4. It was not loud by any means but very noticable, especially during decel. Is this normal to here it? I would presume you should hear some noise as you are moving a few more gears around. Let me know what you think on this. It would be much appreciated.

By the way, all the dealers around here think im crazy about my 2-3 clunk on shifting but a dealer 2 hours away will re-program computer...no problem.

An '05 for only a few months and it already has 38000km on it?  You must do some driving!

There's no need to put it 4x4 once in a while simply for lubrication purposes.  The transfer case is always involved, even in 2wd.

As for noise, yeah, they make some.  Hard for me to put a quantity on that, except to say, don't expect it to be as quite as in 2wd.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, a few miles for a 05 but it was on the road in late 04 and I bought it at 28,000km. Yes, it sure is not as quiet as 2wd thats for sure. I basically just wanted to make sure that its normal to have some noise. Im still working on the dealer here to deal with my 2-3 clunk, slipping tranny(very occasional) and squeeking belts when cold. There is also a tiny bit of play in the steering wheel if you grab it from top to bottom...not sure if thats normal?

Anyway, thanks again.
