The CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Light or 3rd brake light) gets it's power directly from the stop lamp switch. Power for the other stop lamps first goes through the turn signal switch.

So if the CHMSL is working and the other stop lights aren't, it definitely is not the brake light switch or power to the brake light switch. Most likely, in your case, it's the turn signal switch. It would be somewhat rare for it to be a connection and wiggling things around under there may have just been a coincidence.
